Been having a few problems starting/turning over my 99' CLK 430. I never have ANY problems in the morning when I go to work...it always starts right up. I only seem to have this problem if I start the car a few times within a short period of time. The key has had it's battery replaced recently, it makes that "clicking sound" when I place the key in the slot..the starter works but it doesn't turn over. I make about 4-5 turns of the key and it finally turns over...although it seems like it does't want to. Any ideas??

when u turn key to start when fault occurs does the rev counter and speedo flick up if so options are 1, the starter gone rusty or the starter motor faulty u can try lightly lubing the ring gear with a small amount of grease /u will need 2 turn the engine over by hand(clockwise when looking at engine from front).as the engine always stop around the same spot all the time dont get 2 much grease on as it may interfere with crank sensor rotor this normally does the job good luck

Hi,
I have the same problems with my car where it does not start sometimes. The engine turns over for about a second and then cuts out. The rev counter just jumps as if it is about to start. About 3 key turns later, it starts up. I have a E280 which is known for their rust issues and I have had all 4 doors + wings replaced due to rust.

Did you replace the starter motor and was it fine after that? Or did you grease the ring gear? My merc specialist says that it looks like the battery that may be going dead...

Thanks,

Sat.
