'99 E220 CDI Tiptronic gears not working!

My '99 E220 CDI drives perfectly in D, but I can't use the Tiptronic mode. When the lever is nudged to the left to select 'manual' mode, I see a 4 on the dashboard for a second before it goes bact to D.

Please help...

Should I be worried about the gearbox being on it's way out?

It sounds that there is a glitch with the associated gearbox electronics rather than the gearbox itself.the mercedes diagnostic computer at a dealer should be able to identify this problem.In any event hang fire as one of the other members will probably give you a second opinion shortly.Regards

This is not a gearbox problem. It could be the control unit but sounds more like the selector unit. It will need putting on a diag unit to read fault codes & actual value etc.
