Hi there!

I have owned a good old MB 200 Auto (1988) for 3 months now and it runs like a dream. So far I'm very pleased and my initial worries about bying a 15 year-old car have been proven wrong. However, I have encountered a few minor problems:

1. The temperature gauge on the instrument panel went randomly up and down for a week or so and now stays permanently put at 0. I assume the problem is simply a loose wire/connector?

2. Sometimes there is a whining noise from the front wheels when I apply the brakes. I suspect worn brakepads or..?

3. When cold, the engine doesn't always start on first attempt. Second time it always starts fine. Is it advisable to press down the gas pedal while turning the key - or pressing it down once before turning the key? (this is not the E model but the carborettor model)

4. And finally a general question about the auto gearbox which btw works very smoothly: I know that it's possible to provoke a first gear start by changing the lever to 2 and then back to D while stationary. But what other functions do the 2 and 3 positions have? Is it possible to change gear while actually driving, for example downhill or if you want to maintain a low speed while driving in a long que on the motorway instead of applying the brake every few seconds?

Thanks in advance for your help!

#4: the 2 and 3 "modes" are to prevent the gearbox from switching to higher gears than 2nd or 3rd. You can switch from D position to 3 or 2 when running. This mode is very helpful in driving in a que or in slow traffic in cities, as the gerabox doesn´t switch to higher gears, you don´t need to brake as frequently (you can just lift off the accelerator and "engine brake" more instead).

Like jaques2k says it will give you engine braking.

The only caveat is be careful at what speed you down shift!

The speedo has orang/red marks on the outer ring that indicate maximum gear speeds ( I, II, III ) I suggest using those (hopefully they are not for manual gearboxes!).
