My 1996 C180 had a corroded terminal in one of the ignition coils, which caused a minor misfire from time to time. After a while I finally decided to replace it with a cheapo Eurocarparts one. This cured the misfire and the car was running well - until about 6 weeks later, when it started idling badly, and not pulling away properly, but, once it was accelerating it pulled well enough.
I decided to replace the o2 sensor ( the original had 109,000 miles ) still no joy, nothing for it, booked it into the local indie merc. "expert" He ran the diagnostic on it, replaced all the leads, plugs, then decided the PMS ecu unit was faulty. So, managed to track one down on e-bay for £278.00. This he duly fitted and re-programmed - guess what ? yep! still not running properly!! after much mumbling about Cat. and or removing exhaust etc. I decided to take the car away from him (in case he hurt himself on something sharp !) and try something, or someone else. The costs for all this was now up to £450.00 and still the problem wasn't cured. I finally had enough, so, bought another SLK 230 ( masochistic tendencies ? ) as the wife refused to lend me hers.
Anyway, what to do with the C class ? It is a pretty car and I had spent lots of dosh on it previously - so, really want to see it go to a good home ( and get some of my dosh back - not that masochistic!! ) Someone suggested another indie. who was supposed to ben"really good" so, car was duly deposited with him yesterday. Gets a phone call from him today, conversation goes like this; "yeah mate, checked yer car, your coil for 3 and 4 cylinders is faulty - looks like new? - who fitted it? " -------aaaaaaarrrrgh!!
Lessons learned? NEVER assume just because something was replaced it can't be faulty ! DON'T buy cheap pattern parts ! and finally, make sure that the local indie. Merc. expert - really is!!
