Although a MB owner, I have been purhaps more into using the car as a workhorse than anything else. And so I was duely puzzled when reading other users post quoting things like W220, W140 etc... What are they? If they are the models, when don't people just say straightforward E240, S320 etc?

Thanks

Hi Tony,
Welcome to the forums. Never heard of a W1220 (typo) but W numbers as are they are called, refer to the actual model.

IE: A 1982 EClass is completely different to a 2005 EClass. The 82 one is a W123 and a 2005 one is a W211. The E models in between are W124 (85-96) and W210 (95-02). If you look here: http://forums.mercedesclub.org.uk/forumdisplay.php?f=19 You will get a brief idea there.

W this and that!!

I agree with tonytup!

I don't drive a 'W211', I drive a 2005 model E Class!!

I guess over the years I've driven cars with all sorts of code names, but call me a revolutionary, I tend to call them by what it say's in the brochure or on the boot!!

Let's keep the code names for the car makers and the anoraks!!!

Don't know what you are agreeing with Newbie. Tony asked a question. I answered it. Okay, if you say you driver a 2005 Eclass, we all know it is the W211 shape. But if someones car was manufactuered on the year a new model was introduced, the W numbers are helpful, and most members use them for that reason.

'E320' can mean W124, W210 or W211 (3 completely different cars).
'E320 1995' can mean W124 or W210
'E320/w124' is a paticular car with a paticular engine.

Thanks for the reply. I take the Wxxx as a more accurate reference to a particular version to avoid confusion.

Yes Tony. Pretty simple way also, and avoids confusion.

It also helps for MB parts as the part no. will have this code at the start.

Heres the E-Classes for starters.

hope nobody goes on about the porsche 911. i think they are on the 997 now. but it used to be a 996. then there was the other versions of it like the 993. but it is still a 911. so if you have and SLK for example is it a r170 or an r171. as they are completly different we would need to know which model you had so we can help. and it would be no use saying it is a 2004 model and they both have a 2004 model. and both are still a merc. and to make matters worse, the service book refers to 2 models. the SLK and the A Class. fancy thinking that a car thats starts at around £29k for a bottom range version, should have its book joined with the a class.

however, i helps me when people put both up. so aslong as you put at least one version of your car up those who can help will, as they know what model you are talking about. and seeing as we are here to help it shouldn't be anorakish....

opps. there goes another train...now what was that number.
