I have just bought an A-Class (W reg) and it has come with one flatblade key. The manual indicates that remote locking is an optional extra, but looking at a spec on the web (Parkers) shows it as standard.

Please could someone tell me if this car has a remote locking facility (or how I can tell - doesn't seem to be any sensors inside the car)? If I don't use a key fob to lock the car, does that mean that the alarm/immobiliser is not enabled?

Thanks.

The early A-classes as I remember all have remote central locking from then factory ( I have seen a million and never one without ) and a MBSS alarm was fitted On all PDI's inspections. The ultra sonic sensors should be located on the A -pillers.

Is your key not the square flip out type with two buttons on it?

Well hang on, I am talking about UK cars. Where are you and your car? Oz?

Thanks Ellsy.

I am located in the UK. The only key I have is a fixed blade with a plastic square on the end - no buttons or anything fancy on it. The key unlocks the central locking from driver's or passenger door and works the ignition. Not sure if that means that the alarm doesn't work, as other posts in this forum suggest that if the alarm goes off and the fob is not available it will only stop when the ignition is started (ie. it will not be de-activated by opening the doors with the key).

In that case you certainly have no alarm as it worked via the radio remotes.

Very strange, I have never seen An A class with out radio remotes. It is possible your car is a import.

From the number plates, the car was purchased from Jefferies Farm Trade Centre (probably originally judging by the state of the number plates). They seem to sell cars cheaper than main dealers, so it maybe an import version.

I took the key to a locksmith, who says that it is chipped, but he is able to copy it for £50. MB dealer told me that they could get a duplicate key for about £15-20 (although this was over the 'phone), but if it was a remote fob version it would be £145 + VAT (ouch ).
