A160 auto elegance reverse problem

Hi I purchased today an s reg(98) A160 elegance auto love the car but it seems to have a problem selecting reverse when cold.When selected i don't feel the box engaging and when i press the accelerator pedal the engine just whines then an all mighty thud it reverses for a short distance mainly free wheeling.But when the engine has warmed up it works perfectly.I am far from an expert but does this point to a lack of oil in the gearbox if so what sort of price can i expect to pay for a repair?

Oh dear.

This sounds like either a terminal problem ot valve body issue. Needs to go on a Star really.
