My A160 timing chain has gone. MB tell me I need a new engine.

I bought the car 2 years ago from an approved dealer, with FSH and always had it serviced at approved dealers.

I have a quote from approved MB dealer, but it is outrageous.

Does anyone know an independent mechanic / garage where this work could be done?

I live in north Lancashire.

Thanks

Steve

Sorry to hear of your troubles.....not nice!

The best thing you could do is get down to WH Smith and buy a copy of Mercedes Enthusiast........this mag has loads of breakers and independent garages advertising their servivces.

I'm sure this will point you in the right direction.

Or talk to Crewe Engines who spcialise in Merc engines. They sell rebuilt engines and will come and collect your car. Tel No is 01270-526333 and website is www.creweengines.com

Good luck

I presume that when the timing chain went it bent the valves and possibly holed a couple of pistons. Fords were notorious for timing belts snapping, I had 2 go ! Before writing off the engine I would personally remove the head and check it myself, at the worst it will be a service exchange head / valve assembly, a new piston or two and possibly a rebore, not the end of the world. I take it that you have done monster mileage of a 100 K +, if not I would cause world war 3 with the dealer. Might be worth doing a search on the internet for failed engines or timing chain problems, could be a common fault and perhaps give you some ammunition for a claim. What age and mileage is the car out of interest ?
