Hi there,

Helping out a friend with an a170 manual with the auto clutch... thingy, its got noisy transmission and we want to change the gearbox oil before giving the box the mark of death.

So, are the gearbox oil filler plugs the large alen key bolts found on the side of the differential? Or should i be looking elsewhere?

Any help appreciated as its starting to get dark and we need the car running later.

Cheers

justin.

found on baby benz... "Having read over the last couple of years details of several cases where the gear box oil level has been found low I decided some time back to check mine to see that it was OK because I had a very slight whine in 3rd gear.
Bearing mind you have to get under the car, I have been putting it off until today I purchased the oil and having taken a rest to get over the shock of the price £13.66 litre decided the change it as I was unsure how to measure that the correct quantity was in the box On my car the box hold 1.8litres it being a (716501 manual box) the first problem was finding a tool that would fit the plugs? 14mm Allen key that's big, had not got one so used a deep headed hexagonal bolt 14mm and fitted a couple of locking nuts to the thread, that then enabled me to remove the Drain and filler plugs. I actually drained 1.41 litres. The box has never leaked and the drive shaft seals have never been replaced, so no oil has leaked. Bearing in mind that one of the manual gear boxes holds 1.4 /1.5 respectively I phoned my branch and confirmed the quantity for my box 1.8L, so I'm now running with approx 20% more gear box oil than was previously the case, is it any wonder MB gearboxes play up, albeit usually automatics if MB short change them on oil/fluid
lofty
" is he talking about the two on the diff?
