Thanks for responses to "Accelerator Surge", but WD40'ing the cable and regulator under the bonnet hasn't made any difference and doesn't appear to be sticking anyway (230TE '92). Car's still reluctant to cruise at a steady speed - even with minimal throttle it just keeps accelerating and I need to virtually come all the way off the pedal to stop it. Any other ideas?? Many thanks

It has to be something on the throttle mechanism somewhere (unless anyone knows of anything electrical that can do this - what's the microswitch for?).
Anyway, if the throttle isn't backing off when you release the pedal I would get someone to operate the pedal and watch the linkage. Could it be a weak or missing return spring? This would reduce the resistance on the pedal making it surge and would not return to idle. Normally the mechanism will return before the pedal due to the slack in the cable, but if the spring is failing then you will need the cable to actively pull the lever back, which sounds like what you describe.
Perhaps you could post a pic of the mecanism as if something is missing or broken it may not be obvious to you or I but the techs here will spot it.

Hi

My 91 230TE has two springs on the throttle linkage. One can easily be seen on the nearside in line withe the linkage. The other one is at right angles to the engine below the fuel distributer. You can feel it below the end of the throttle cable sleeve.
My throttle cable was very slack I have ovecome this by tightening up the cable not using the end stop and adjusting throttle switch position makes a big difference to driving comfort at speed.
good luck

Hi

Is the cable adjusted to tight as this is quite common there should be 1.5 to 2mm free play in the cable
