advice buying 80's 230/280 CE

Hi All,
did a search on the forum and didn't come up with much so:

I am looking at 230/280 CE Merc's as a little gift to myself but was wondering if anyone can advise of any specific things to look out for when I see possible purchases, I am not looking for concours standard and really want something I can use at weekends and 'tinker' with. I am gonna let the wife have the C220 !

Any tips / hints specific to these car's would be very helpful

Hi Mark
haven't much to do with coupes but had the four door. My models included 200Petrol,200D,240D and 250 which mechanically were bulletproof but did suffer from rust on the inner sills where the seat belt reel is attached. Perished rear window rubber which in time will rust steel underneath the seal permitting water to enter the boot. Take out carpets and check for water as any leak in the cabin will result in soggy carpets which take for ever to dry believe me.
