My husband has sold his CLS350 cdi shooting brake. He has his own registration number on it which he wants to retain. The problem is, it is going in for a service and MOT on Thursday 11th June, booked in on the number plate he wants to retain. It needs taxing on 1st July. How does it work?

Just go online to the DVLA and fill in the form to retain the registration (and pay the fee)
DVLA will send you a new V5 and the retention paperwork. It doesn’t matter if you get the MOT done on the old registration as the system will be updated when it gets a new registration. They don’t issue a new paper MOT with the New registration as it’s all online now.

As soon as you get the notification from the DVLA...
Don’t sell the car (if that’s what you’re doing) until you get the new V5 with the new registration number on. (If you do and the new owner applies for a V5 they will then get your registration)
