advice on sl

hi i,have just bought a SL 420 1989, it's got 150k on the clock, seems to be genuine i.e. old MOTs, no service history, oil pressure at 3 while driving, comes down to 2 at traffic lights. Would like advice on what type of service is needed. MOT is due in May. Regards, Damien.

Oil pressure seems ok for the mileage. I would certainly treat her to an engine oil (and filter) change and a new set of spark plugs. Difficult to comment any further as the car would have to be looked over to see if anything else needs doing.(brake pads etc). Check fluid levels in gearbox, diff etc.

If you have service records with the car, I would check to see when the timing chain (if ever) was last changed.

Its bit of a weak spot on the 420's and its worth getting the chain guide rails changed at the same time if you're going to do it.

Also check when the coolant was last changed, same with brake fluid, gearbox oil etc .....if they haven't been done for years, its best to get them changed.

check the drain holes either side of the plenum chamber for the heater as these block up with leaves and stuff, then the water comes into the car, they drain either side of the gearbox, easy to clean out form underneath the car. I found chainging spark plugs fuel filter, oil every 4000 new dizzy cap and arm made a big difference. do gearbox oil and filter nad change the water. Another thing that might help fule consumption is, I took my 1985 280sl to the mercedes dealer and they gave it a tune up and once over for an hours labour £85.00 not bad for piece of mind!!
