Hello.

Looking to buy my first Merc, having moved on from a BMW experience!

I'm very interested in a specific car, and I'd appreciate any views on estimated value, and any other comments generally on the 220CDI.

I'm looking at an 02, met black 220CDI SE Auto, done 80K so far. In great condition, and loaded with extras, inc COMAND, Xenon, Bose sound, leather, elec sunroof, double spke alloys, climate control etc, all factory fitted at the start. It looks great, drives well etc.

Having never bought a car either this expensive or this full of 'extras', I'm not sure how to really evaluate it.

I'd really appreciate any help on this.

Many thanks indeed.

Welcome to the Forum...

Interesting approach, not posting the asking price of the car. I don't know C220CDi values but others here will and this way we'll get to see how accurate their estimates are!

Is it being sold by a main dealer? If so, I assume it has full Mercedes service history, is bang up to date with servicing & recalls, has five good/excellent tyres and a new MOT if it needs one. Does the price include a warranty? Is it a saloon or an estate? Buying it as a company car or private?

If you can confirm these details the C Class experts will comment further... Sounds like a nice spec but I'm more used to older kit so can't really comment

Details..

Hi, Thanks for that.

It's a private sale, saloon, full history, MOT next summer, no warranty other than I'll have to buy myself, last service very recent, and buying for myself.

I haven't put in the asking price, as that's the problem, I can't judge properly, and would really value some independent advice from Mercedes experts. You might imagine that the asking proce is more than I had thought it might be, maily due to the high spec, but what value do the additional things have 3 years down the line?

Hmm, confused, and hoping to agree something at the weekend.

Thank you.

Hi,
My two penneth. The 220CDI is an excellent engine. Not the fastest, but quick enough, smooth for a diesel and very economical. The extras, while nice, do not add much to its real cash value. A small premium but nothing close to the original cost. The command is a lovely toy, but they have been known to play up, and can cost £1,000-2,500 to fix, so i personally rejected a couple of cars with it fitted, not that if the rest of the car is perfect I would necessarily advise against, just that command can be a poisoned chalice on an unwarrantied car if you are unlucky.
Have a look at the MB web site. There are hundreds of C220's of various specs so this will give you a good guide, though remember a dealer car comes with 12 month full warranty so the car you are looking at should be cheaper.
As a general rule of thumb, I generally view a loaded car to be fractionally cheaper than an unloaded one that is 6-12 months younger or the next model up, or a private full spec around the same price as a dealer basic one. Remember, if they had to trade it in, they would be getting little more than bottom book so anything you pay over that is a bonus to them.
Parkers has it at 11 on a forecourt and 8.5 trade in though not allowing for spec. A quick glance shows MB have one with 91k at £13k and others with 40-50k at around £15.5k (all well negotiable with inspection and warranty remember) though all are pretty much basic spec. Based on that, I'd be offering around the 11-12k.

It all depends on how much you want it and how much they want to sell. I paid a little over the odds for mine partially because of the spec, so who am I to say!

I can see why you are very interested in the car, there are plenty of C220s around but most will be poverty spec. A car as well equipped as this is a bit of a rarity and at the right price won't hang around the forecourt long.

If it has a full MB service history and no accident damage, it is probably worth what MB are offering a base model on their forecourt for. Its worth taking out an extended warranty on this type of car and this will cushion you in the event of a major problem for the first 12 months. I spent some months tracking down a similar specced E Class and had to make up my mind quickly to secure it. Having owned the car for a year now I am pleased I waited for the right car to come along.

Good Luck!

I sold my 02 plate, 220CDI Coupe (Evo Spec, minus the panoramic sunroof) with 103k on clock for £9800 on last Sunday. The car was very much standard, with only a 6CD changer as an addition. In retrospect, I could have got £10k, if I was patient (or maybe not).

Buying a 220CDI

I bought a 02 Classic 220CDI a few months a go. There are lots of problems on the net with this car but apart from being a bit 'twitchy' on corners particularly in the wet it has been a great car.

Very comfortable for long journies, perhaps a little soft on the suspension side, great seats, good performance and good economy.

The engine is good but like many dealers ticks over like a tractor! Great on the motorways.
