Hello all,

This morning I was presented with my keys for my "new" Mercedes - Model is 260E. It's in a good condition, 85.ooo miles on the clock, registered in 1990, and almost looks like new (it was kept in a garage for a while).

I have some questions though, and hope someone on this great forum could help me with...

1) There seems to be some "milky" leaks in the windscreen (only on the sides - at the moment). They seem to be inside the glass - no obvious cracks are visible? Would anyone know what the reason could be be, and if this was anything to worry about?

2) Some rust over the front wheel arches - will this be expensive to fix?

3)The central locking seems a little slow (we used to have a brand new ford focus - it may be due to the fact that the key in this car needs to actually be "inserted" ;) - inserting the key, after that it takes some time for it to actually be able to turn (to either lock it or unlock)....

4) Does anyone know someone around Berkshire doing Mercedes repairs (not as a garage, but private), or someone who sells parts for this model?

For any other advise - or warnings - for this specific model would be very grateful....We would like to "pimp it up", and are very excited, but never owned a Mercedes before...

Many thanks in advance

And hello to you and welcome with your 124:D:D

The milky areas on the glass are caused by moisture getting in between the lamination's on the glass, the sealing has possibly got weak and let this happen.

New front wings are not expensive and the best bet in the long run,, they are relatively cheap to buy,,but they would need to be painted, you could do a local repair for now but it will soon return.

The central locking is vacuum operated, and the chances are that there could be a few pipes that need changing.

Re the engineer,, there is no one on the forum,,but we do have a very good indie who knows the cars well and that is STAR of reading who post here on the forum, he is not expensive,,and you do need someone who knows MB cars

I look after a few 124 Mercs in a private capacity.

Been around for a long time and currently doing an overhaul of my rear subframe and differential mounts on my own car (changing all the bushes with new factory parts and have invested in special tools over the years to do these kind of jobs.).

Located in Caversham.

E-mail me and let me know your requirememnts and I will get back to you.

Include your full VIN in the e-mail and I will send you the factory printout for your car
showing the full spec - you may be surprised.

Hey all,

Thanks for the replies - I am looking forward to be able to take the car for a drive now (it's registered as off road for now, but have insurance in place now, so will hopefully get it taxed soon).

I won't worry about the windscreen for now then, and the wheel arches will have to wait for a little while, as we need to assess on how much we want to spend in ...well....pimping it up.

Very nice forum, this - will post a few more in the relevant areas when needed. Once again, many thanks for your replies so far!!
