Hi, ive decided to buy a 2nd hand Mercedes E270 CDi and need some advise, its a 2001 and it has 140,000 miles on the clock. Im a little worried about maintenance costs over the next few years, any idea what i can expect? im thinking this car should go to 300,000 miles with this engine easily enough? any advise on what i should look out for when i test drive it? anyother info appreciated thks!

im guessing it isn't a UK car as they didn't do the 270 here in 2001.
Usual rules apply. Full maintenace history inc gearbox oil and filters are a must.
It will probably need glowplugs at some point but as you say, the 270 engine should be good for 300k at least.

I have seen 1 uk spec W210 E270CDI (factory order) so it may be a UK car. Rust is the biggest issue if it is a W210

every part of it apart from the tyres ;) front sub frame closure plate, sub frame, check under rubbers doors, perches, bodywork tailgate, wheel arches, bonnet ...some one will add more no doubt, the CDI engines can be a bit soft as well ...try a cheaper but bullet proof E300 td 3 liter lump..... best diesel engine ever. mines done 97500 just run in :-D:-D

I'm not sure the E300 TD is better than the later CDi engines. Mine is a 1999 E220CDi with now 136k on it and it is lovely. There is a bit of rust round the boot lock and one patch on the bottom of the drivers door about the size of a new 5p.
Allegedly the door tops and wheel arches are prone to rust but mine are fine. Maybe MB sorted it under warranty before I bought it.

Don't know about the 270Cdi engine but it seems to have been fine in the M Class for many years before it appeared in the New 2002 Eclass.

I've checked the cross members and suspension turrets and there is no rust problem. Mine is an October 99 first of the facelift W210's.

Not hit 60k in mine yet so can't comment on longevity but so far its still getting better and better. I fully expect to get >150k and in reality > 200k out of it provided I continue to maintain it properly.

Some 210s do rust but not all but do get it checked over. As has been said,
1) Around the boot lock
2) Tops of doors under the rubber seal
3) Wheel arches
4) Front cross member (have to remove the under tray to see it).

Assuming its a 2001, MB may fix it foc for you if there's the odd spot. Mine did rust slightly in (1,2,3) but the cross member was fine and the rust didn't return once fixed by MB and it didn't cost me a penny so no real complaints.

Hi i remember being at the dealers and open an new 211 door almost pulled it off it's hinges, then slamming it shut, used to a 210 much heaver built car solid..and mine has very little rust:rolleyes: was there a build quality problem with the 2001 - 2004 models, as after that the Mercedes dealers where scrapping around for work as all mercs became more reliable,

it is true that the doors on the 211 feel less solid than the 210. I'm not sure how much tyhat has to do with the fact that MB did away with their unique door catch system (with that big metal pin) and moved to the slide latch system that everyone else has been using for years. The solid souding clunk seemed to disappear with it.
