I have E220 CDI, W210 2002 which has destroyed the alternator bearings and the pulley, replacing the bearings should be very easy but I can’t work out if the thread on the pulley is right-hand or left-hand! I’d be very grateful is someone could advise me.
The Alternator is a Dephi P/N 000 150 1650.

Hi Graeme,

Yes, mine has the overrun clutch, I'm not sure which caused the problem but both bearings and clutch are destroyed. I have the correct key for the inner bolt of the pulley and as I can grip the pulley I was hoping to remove it and then get the local dealer to tighten on the new pulley. That should save me buying the special tool which I would (hopefully) use once! Your document was very interesting thanks but it doesn't mention the thread rotation! Thanks again.

I would assume that the rotation of the alternator would cause tightening as apposed to loosening ????

Hi Martin,

Yeah, I bet you're right but I removed the alternator before making note of the direction, I was hoping to avoid starting her up without the belt and no water!

Thanks

A short spin wouldn't cause harm.

I've just checked mine (C220 CDI 2004 facelift), the alternator spins clockwise looking from front, I'd be surprised if yours were different.

Just given it a try and it is the same direction as your, I guess that means it's a left-hand thread then?

Thanks again

No, it means it's a right hand thread. A left hand thread would tend to loosen when driven clockwise.

The pulley its self isn't threaded, it's the bolt through the middle so wouldn't that make you think it's a left-hand?? I've tried turning both way but with excessive force.

Hi Rappey69,

Because the pulley has collapsed I can grip the inner race to undo it but can you remember which direction it is to undo?

Thanks

I hope you get your answers, it sounds like you've had a frustrating afternoon.

Been there many times, good luck.

Am pretty sure when pulley is held bolt is undone anticlockwise .
It was tight as hell and required a lot of force to undo .

you will need the tool to put the new pulley on (if you dont already have it) and can be bought for as little as £17.
Read lots of old posts about pulley removal and no one mentioned anything about it being lh thread so that also points to undoing it the normal way.

Left or right

Having just had one dene about 1500 miles ago the tool is a torx male and hollow female.
The hollow one holdsthe clutch pulley and the male one fits the bolt.
The bolt is standard rotation, ie right hand thread.
Right to tighten and left to undo.
The bolt needs to be "fairly" tight not rock bar tight as the rotation tends to keep everything snugged up.

Thanks to everyone for your help.

What was confusing and just to confirm for anyone else taking on this task: what appears to be a torque bolt in the middle of the pulley is actually the end of the alternator shaft, so hold the shaft and turn the pulley in the normal direction to remove. It's so obvious once you've removed it!

For £20 it will be crap as they can be very very tight and I have broken two recently (good quality sets)
