Been quoted £180 for auto gearbox oil and filter (parts and labour) change by an indie..
He reckons it's an hours labour but the oil is expensive...
Told me you can't just bung in Dexron 3 it has to be special MB stuff you can only get from MB..

That's about the right ball park the proper M/B oil works out at about £92. I paid about £190 for mine a couple of months back was originally quoted £150ish but my indie had a problem with a seized bolt which added an hours labour. This was for oil change in trans and torque converter new filter and sump gasket plus Merc oil;)

The gearbox oil was £8.07 per ltr + Vat from my MB dealer.
£5.56 for Gasket
£7.49 for Filter
£0.33 for a new locking cap for the dipstick hole
all + Vat
And just less than 1hr labour from MB

Although mine doesn't have the torque converter drain so only 4ltrs could be changed. Yours will be ~7 ltrs.

Thanks for the replies....I did consider doing it myself courtesy of parrot's guide but i just don't have the time or a ramp/pit.
The Indie is Merparts at Port Glasgow and they do have a good reputation.
I guess its not too excessive an amount then i just wasn't too sure about the fluid being specialist...Booked in for 4th Jan!!

hi,
Honestly, think that is very expensive regardless of how much the fluid is i would definitely do it my self.
If your gonna pay that i would go to the main dealer and get them to do it i reckon they would be cheaper as well.

I tend to agree, about £70 worth of parts so he is looking at £110 for lab. Thats excessive.

He can probably get the parts slightly cheaper too.

Sounds like a £100 job to me, especially if you already use the garage for other work. Maybe he dosnt really want the job!!

Yes!

There is no way on this planet that I would pay nearly 200quid for someone to drail a few litres of oil, change a filter and pour some new oil in!

But then again, I am a terrible tightwad :)

Manual boxes are easy,no filter, just take out drain plug and refil to top of standpipe. no special oil either.

But if he is,,:D :then a little bit of thinking is needed. No pit or ramp, just drive it over someones fish pond and you have all the room you need, you can put all of the tools in a bowl floating on the pond.

Check on the oil for your manual box it may be ATF even some of the MERC trucks have ATF in their manual boxes

£130 would be closer to the mark. But that depends on what his hourly rate is.

:???: :???: Have you been drinking ATF or something Malcolm?

You clearly have no idea of what it's like up here or you wouldn't have made such a stupid comment.

There is no way your ridiculous fish pond idea is of any use, as a pond up here would of course be permanently frozen solid what with the relentless arctic weather this far in the grim oop north :D :D
