Hi to every one
I would like some advice on buying a 1997 C class AMG 230 sport having only owned
C180 and find the reliability of these engine very good, I am thinking of buying a C class 230 AMG Sport can any one tell me if the engine is identicle
to the C180 apart from being a bit bigger, any advice on this would be very
much appreciated as I am not at all conversant with this model

Ok, in terms of the 230, AMG never offered an AMG version of this model and engine wise its a 4 cylinder which can either come with or without a Kompressor, the 230K produces @ 190bhp.

They are very strong engines, capable of huge mileages, but can be considered to be a bit unrefined, especially in the case of the 230K

What makes you think it is an AMG? Some owners have been known to add AMG badges to their cars. To the best of my knowledge, AMG never did an engine as small as the 230.

As above, it will be a C230k sport with an AMG badge stuck on it. Does it have AMG wheels or body kit?
If so, check its been properly done and not simply tarted up by an amateur as there are lots of fake AMG parts out there.

Hi,
A 230k can/has AMG wheels standard my 97 'p' has though they are only 15'. But Mercedes ONLY made 2 AMG C classes C36 AND C43.

Test drove a "AMG C240" Sport this morning - basically just wheels, 18" with 245/40s on the rear, 235/45s on the front, rubber wheel arch protectors and the AMG badge.

Wheels were rough and too many stone chips with spiders webs under the paint work - so passed and when for a standard C240 Sport.

I suspect the car was some kind of "dealer special".

I maybe wrong but no C class w202's were ever fitted with 18 inch wheels from the factory.
As its been said earlier there were only 2 AMG C class w202's C36 and a C43.

Right I'm going to get drawn into the '230 4 Cyclinder Merc' Engines Are Rough' debate a last. I will admit to not having driven any of the Merc Vee's,
how ever I would not describe mine as rough perhaps a 'slightly harsh' iinduction roar under heavy acceration, but that was while I had a K&N Air Filter fitted. I do have a RR 4.6 HSE and its just as smooth as that....
Perhaps its down to the quality of engine oil fed to the engine?

Time for me to add my thought as well....

My father's partner owned an SLK 230K for a while and I found the engive very rough. Fast and responsive yes, just not very refined at all.

Sounded a bit like a jet engine at full throttle.... :D

Sold it later and got a SLK 350.... nice.

Its all relative.
After a lifetime of Fords, my 4cyl C220 petrol was quiet and smoooth. The nose was buzzy but it was a lot more refined that the Ford twin cam I'd had before.
I then bought a 240 V6 - so smooth it made the 220 feel like a bag of spanners (though I still enjoyed driving it).
From memory the V8 is smoother again (not driven a merc one since the late 80s admittedly) and my recollection of the Jag V12 was that it was as close to an electric motor as you could get.

So, it all depends on what you're used to.

Someone commented that the new V6 diesels were noisy for example. All I can say is drive my 270 and say that!
