Don’t know if it is still the same but wherever I went in Africa there were always lots of old Peugeots around. It they can withstand Africa, it’s drivers & bush mechanics they have to be good.:)
That would almost certainly be the 504 - they were as ubiquitous in Africa as the Toyota Hilux. Legend.

Yes on above, but not the electronic shxte twas 404 p up 504 saloon 504 est
Bomb proof except when locals fitting liners instead of measuring protrusion they wud divide the paper shims by 4 fit them all , then put 2 head gaskets cos liners protruded too much. Unsupervised they would always do this. Even supervised they would argue about all shims shud be fitted!!!!

An old B-Class.

Yea. I grew up in Africa (Rhodesia and SA), worked in Ivory Coast and Malawi (and travelled it a bit, Botswana, Namiba, Mozambique, Kenya) and my in-laws lived most of the lives in Kenya and Tanzania. 504s as far as the eye could see. My father in-law swore by them.

Well, people did invite me back for an update so I thought I'd briefly drop by...

Essentially, this 508 I've bought is truly stunning car, better in every* way than my E-Class. But I haven't come here to gloat.

I'm NOT comparing Peugeot with Mercedes; I'm comparing a 2019 car with a 2009 car. In that time, new universes must have been created because the 508 seems to be from a different dimension entirely...

It is smoother, quieter, more nimble, more fluid, more economical, safer, more technological, better looking, more cleverly designed, faster (at least when the Merc was stock)...

* The ONLY downside is the lack of an under-boot storage area that the Merc had. That, and the slightly smaller boot volume, mean that I had to buy a top box and roof bars just to take the in-laws on holiday...

I was very proud to be a Mercedes owner for that short time and it's possible I'll come back to the brand in future. If I do, I'll make sure I buy the latest model I can afford. I took a punt on that old-ish E-Class; it served me well but - by God - I hadn't realised what dinosaur technology and design it was until I stepped into the 508.

Anyway, hope nobody minds this post from the outlands and I hope you're all well!

In my view there is f, a that will compete with older cars for reliability and or ease of repair, frankly I am more than happy to sacrifice some mpg to avoid all the " roped" to dealer rubbish that's about now. If Yr able to retire running leases and or changing car as soon as warranty expires, that's different, I can't, and even if cud, i wud not. By todays stds a 25 + Yr old car is f bomb proof. My NG tf provides hrs or uncomplicated economic ownership. And I know a well fettled 404,504 will do the same. F a full of electronics /sensors will live with em. In overall running costs. Might be a nicer place to sit (matter of opinion) but at wot price.
