I have an 03 R230 SL350 new to me. Just after pulling away each time there is a chime (but no warning lights) and I am at a loss to know why! The centre console lid does not seem to 'lock' when it closes and I can't seem to find any information why is has 2 catches on it. Could the chime have anything to do with this?

Yes if the centre box lid is not closed properly that can cause a chime, but there is usually a message in the dash something like "close centre console".

Usually a chime is accompanied by a message, if you use the steering wheel menu buttons you can view stored error messages,

I doesn't sound too serious, as there is no red or amber message.

Thanks Mark, I did wonder if the centre console was the problem. I will have to have a closer look at why it won't close properly.

Definitely could be, there is an inner lower box, so two catches, I need to go out and have a look at mine I haven't looked for ages. I will report back.

You'll have to get used to chimes, messages on the dash and such, with an R230 Rhoda. Great fun!

I've had a look, and the reason there are two buttons is that the lower button opens the large bottom compartment, and the top button opens the top compartment. Sounds like yours are not working properly, maybe a quick squirt of WD40 on the catch might help. I just found some old CDs in mine, so al good.

Thanks Mark, I will give it a go with WD!

I have a feeling that the catch in the console (not the lid) may be damaged which is why it won't close properly. The top part of the lid will not separate from the bottom part so that seems to be an issue too. Who would have thought the centre console could give troubles!

Not knowing what the catch is supposed to look like, I can't tell if anything is visibly wrong. Any ideas please? I cannot separate the two top lids from each other and don't want to force them. I cannot take of the armrest top because I cannot get at the screws! Grrrr!

The lids will only separate when the box is closed, if that makes sense.

So put it all down, then lift the top lid, and the top compartment will open.

If you cannot close it securely, you definitely have a problem, that will cause the chime.

On the plus side, just think what treasures may be in the closed section.

Thanks Mark, it is the case that the lid will not shut securely which explains why I can't open the top lid. I can't get the cassette out for the CD multi-changer either so I think the car may have been owned by someone heavy handed! I will get the CD looked at on Wednesday when it goes in for mew speakers. I probably going to have to take it to Mercedes to sort out the centre armrest, sitting and twisting to work on it is doing my back in and Chiropractors are even more expensive than mechanics!

We had a same issue with our first r230 with the centre console catch broken, in our case it looked like some one had tried opening the console lid while the car was in motion and forced it open snapping off the lock. Unfortunately the lock it self wasn't a separate item so we eventually purchased a second console. I did a thread on this change a good few years ago but can't seem to find the thread, I think it was under 'SLK up grade to SL'??
We never had a chime or the message up on the dash as it still closed. You can, or we could still open the compartments separately once the top lid was open and with a screw driver I could manipulate the other release catch.
