another request for good independant servicing

I also need a service, on an r-reg e320 station wagon, can anyone recommend anywhere between croydon and gatwick, or redhill and sevenoaks? Or is servicing something that i can reasonably expect to do myself (i am not unfamiliar with things mechanical, and there's nothing in particular wrong, i just don't want it to break down unneccessarily (wife's car....)) Could i get a list of service items from anywhere?

i searched on this before requesting and note there's been loads of similar requests by area, eg cornwall, welsh coast, stalbans; mod's is this something that a small sub-forum or list could be maintained of, valuable resource to forum members, and v valuable to companies who keep appearing postively on it........

I quite agree. I live near Eastbourne and have used a small 'back street' mechanic for the last 15 odd years. His premises leave a little to be desired but his workmanship is reliable and I never feel ripped off. The only downside is that he is unable to do much in the way of investigative work and does not have specialist equipment such as diagnostics. However, he charges £25 an hour + VAT. My local Mercedes dealer is something like £90 an hour!! How can this be justified. I am not in the league to be able to go to a main dealer and would support your request for a list of independent mechanics.

25 quid and hour, for that i might drive to eastbourne! meantime anyone got anyone to recommend, i need to get it done next week. there's a chap on Hobbs industrial estate on the a22 north of east grinstead who advertises in the local free rag, anyone know of him, any good? thanks anyone...

I think it would be a great idea to make a list of all of these independents. I just used Mitch at Haywood Motors, 23A Lambolle Place, Belsize Park NW3 (020 7722 0911) for repairs to my 2001 CLK. They were half the price of Mercedes Hampstead and seemed to be very honest about what did and did not need done (as opposed to MB which was basically racking up a list of things to make money off of me). It goes for an MOT next month so I will see then who has been fibbing .......
