How does the fuel trip computer work on a w210 e32o cdi. There are two screens one says after start and one says after reset .On the screen that says after start, is this the fuel consumption the car is actually doing, or is the car taking an average and lying to me :D . The reason i ask is that say when you are doing like 70 mph the screen will say 38 mpg with a speed of like 44 above it . I Dont under stand dohhhh:confused: Any help would be greatly loved :p Also what does the button in the ashtray compartment next to the cigarette lighter do?

After reset is the average since you last reset the trip.

After start is the actual mpg at the time with the average mph since the start of yoyr journey.

Not sure about the button in the ash tray, any symbols on it?

The switch next to the ashtray is for the auxiliary heater. As the 320 is such a big lump to warm up the cars are fitted with an auxiliary heater to provide cabin warmth from start up (I think the unit is on a timer and only works below 7C). If you press the switch to on (with red light) the unit is turned off. I do this most of the time as the heater uses diesel so hits economy.

The after reset zeroes automatically when the car has been stood for more than 6(?) hours. The after reset never resets unless you do it manually and press the R button so can give an average over however long you want. I had mine up to 30,000 miles and intended to leave it for as long as I kept the car, but it was reset by the dealer during some maintenance sadly.
