Try Steve Redfearn

Hi arorat Try Steve Redfearn in Wimbledon, not far from Kingston Rd. Great Indie Outfit. I use them for My wife's A Class. Never had a prob and good prices. Do not use MB Direct Kingston- Poor service lacking personel touch.

Wouldn't go near Redfearn myself having seen their work first hand. They are overpriced as well.

Hi, I also live in Surbiton and use SS Motors in Weybridge, they are good and have a very reasonable labour rate.

I have also had good advice from James Leigh in Colliers Wood on several occasions, although never used him to actually do any work.

regards,

Dave

Had a friend who used SS - He wasn't unhappy them. I brought him to TM Motors though and he was much more impressed with their knowledge and they are slightly cheaper - if prices have remained the same over the last 6 months.

W202 C240 is booked in with TM Motors for Monday to check the Engine Judder / MAF / etc. I am told the cost is £50 + VAT for Star Diagnostics plus labour plus parts to fix the problem.

Why can't they fix the problem (if its simple and fixable in 1 hour) in the cost of £50 + VAT ?

They do seem a bit on the expensive side, and want to take on everything.

Some one brings something to me to fix,I do not charge for the use of my test gear in finding the fault. The test gear is to help me in doing a good job

I am stuck now and need an expert.

My Indi can not diagnose the fault on his generic laptop, otherwise he would have fixed the fault on the recent service (last week), he just wiped the codes and reset the counter.

I need a Merc Indi, Merx is in Hatfield, I guess I could pop there or how about Prestige in Portsmouth he is mobile, but I don’t want to waste his time by calling him over and then order the parts and call him back.

What do I do Malcolm ?

Well I am in the middle, both SAM and herts merx are both new, but very experienced, also good on costing, give one of them a chance to show how good they are

Most places will charge to put the car on a star machine. The problem for indies with new clients is that they get alot of people who just want to pick their brains and then go elsewhere to get the work done, when they find out whats wrong. So most will charge new customers for the diagnostic - how else are you going to get the money back for the thousands it costs to get the diagnostic equipment and keep them up to date?

I think that you have a very good point here,, there is a difference between asking them to fix the car or ask for a read out, and in the later case justifiable to charge

Absolutely. You should try calling TM Motors and saying that Anton recommended you and you would like them to do what ever is necessary on the car to get it fixed. I am sure they will do something on the 50 pound diagnostic charge - I know them very well there.

Cost at TM Motors

Thanks Anton.

I used TM (Tony) £50 for Star diagnostics on Monday and £100 labour today to replace 2 x O2 Sensors (I supplied) and fix the fault, they also cleaned the Venturi as the O2 Sensors did not solve the problem and were still showing ZERO on Start Diagnostics, the fault was jumping between cylinders, so the whole MAF Unit was replaced and all codes reset/rebooted.

They charged me £218 + VAT for the MAF, labour was £50 per hour, so £150 in labour over the 2 visits.

I list the fix in http://forums.mercedesclub.org.uk/showthread.php?t=50703

I did speak to Tony and his mechanics and had a look around the workshop, so in all quite a friendly bunch.
