I'm making the transition from Italian phaffing to German utilitarianism, which is why I'm pestering you all with this probable daily request for help.
Basically I've wanted a merc for ages and one has just come up. Its a 1985 w123 280ce coupe 150K leather with all the jazz! + a new leather interior. Is there anything i should look for on the w122 or w123 other than any obvious rust? (rare bits for example) any help would be greatly appreciated as everyone else just tut's and quote's thier old money pit bla bla bla i've lost all the blood in my bones ,the dogs dead and "she won't let me so i wont help you" etc! please sent you invaluable help to begazzz@hotmail.com.......!

All I would say is they are a sound car. I owned a 300e for over 2 years and I only paid for 3 services and a new rad. I would probably say get it checked by HPI and look for poorly repair panels. These can be expensive. The electric bits and pieces make sure they all work too.
Enjoy your new motor.

Regards
Ian

re w123

hi
the first merc i had was a 1985 200 manual. look for the usual stuff like rust around the wheel arches espically the rear ones. check for rust along the bottom of the rear window too. Also if u buy one take off the inner plastic wheel arch protectors and wash out the drain aways as over time they get clogged up with mud. generally speaking i think they are a great value old car. nearly all the general parts i get from german & Swedish car spares. discs £13.25 each and pads are about £11 for the front £9 for the rear. get yourself a brooklands workshop manual its all very clear.
i needed a new battery tray which i got from merc main dealer £27.00 and new pins for the calipers did seem a bit pricey but on the whole you can run one quite cheaply from G&S and from breakers. i got a manual g box for £117.

best regards
bob

Anyone feeling helpful

Bob 2316,

You reconmmend the Brooklands manual..............

How does this compare to the Haynes "book of lies".

I'll certainly need one or the other, the "E-Class Ownwers Bible" just doesn't go into enough depth to fix anything significant.
