None at the monent, but there's an OM642 in the Jeep Grand Cherokee!
I have a few jobs to do on the W124 which might require some 'specialist' input.

C&V Cars in Swavesey, Cambs. is quite local to me - has anyone had any experience of their work?

Regards,
David

Hi jib,

Hmm, doesn't sound too promising

I hope to re-furb quite a bit of the front suspension during the summer - ball joints, lower arm bushes, dampers etc. However, much depends on gaining sufficient brownie points from SWMBO to get the time to do it:D

If 'the flesh is weak' I may resort to getting some jobs done by an indie - hence the question. I will probably need workshop assistance in replacing the arm bushes and balljoints after I've removed the arms, but Cambridgeshire is pretty poor when it comes to finding places where you can still get small jobs done for a few packets of ciggies:mad:

Apparently there is a Merc (ex main dealer employee, recently made reduntant) specialist in Huntingdon (Stukely meadows in area somewhere behind the Ford dealer & Bright's Instruments). never used them so can't comment, but can find out more if you are interested. There's also a specialist Indie in Fulbourn (Cambridge) a friend used to use them when he had a Merc & was complementary.

Also a good competent garage run by a real engineer in Sawston/Pampisford - Nightingales garage, just next door to where I work - very reasonable prices as I've just had a B service & gearbox oil/filter etc. change on S210 320cdi all for about £300 if I remember rightly, they put semi synth engine oil as I hadn't asked for the 'proper' stuff, but are going to change it for the cost difference of the oil once I get the car back from an insurance job. Only problem is you need to book over 1 month+ in advance for any work.

I looked at a car there and wasn't overly impressed with the customer/garage relationship either.

My hubby has been a mechanic for 30+ years he wont do jobs for a few packs of fags as he dont smoke (well only when a job isn't going right) but he isnt greedy either.

Not sure what your point is, cob.

I've always been a pretty keen and competent DIY-er, and lived in Sheffield for several years. Here - as in many industrial areas - there was no shortage of engineering workshops (and many a main dealer) who'd be only too happy to press in a bearing etc. on a part you'd brought to them.

"Just leave it in the corner and come back in a couple of hours" was the general idea. Payment was either in the form of Woodbines, or a token amount of 'folding' - quite often they'd refuse anything at all....

Fast-forward 30 years and a move southwards, and a lot of that 'bonhomie' has disappeared.

Maybe it's now seen as taking food from babies' mouths by not letting the place do the whole job at £70 an hour.

Maybe I'm just getting old..... :(

Life was not that good up there back in the 60's I had a friend who worked in the rolling mill making springs for BR,,Firth Brown I think it was called. Sheffield was full of engineering firms as you say, all along the Tinsley Road and viaduct

Ooppss I guess my point is I was trying to be funny haha:D not funny arsey!

Hubby is of the same thought as you, a little job here and there and a nice bit of back scratching goes a blumin long way but sadly he has had too many P takers to be so generous anymore. He isnt greedy on price but has had many a comment of 'well if you were as good as you say you are you would be double that!' Ho Hum you cant win I guess

Sorry if I offended you mate.

Hi Cob,

Oh, no offence taken

I take your point about p**s-takers, though.

I guess there's also the issue of increased litigation 'awareness'. Garages may well not want to leave themselves open to attack should something go badly wrong with a DIY-ers car on which they've had some 'off the books' input.

Maybe I'm just looking at things with rose-tinted specs (cue Hovis advert!)

A few years ago I used a firm with Wilby in the title just north of Ely at Chettisham. I thought they were quite reasoanble.

Further afield, Derrick Wells in stowmarket are very good and very thorough, but no the cheapest I expect. Us u as in most things in life, quality comes at a price.

Also a firm in Newnham, Cambridge that do a lot of merc work
