There is no temp sender in the box as you say. the coolers are often linked to the rads

So how can STAR read the gearbox temperature ?

Wis does not say gearbox temp, it says engine temp, I am pretty sure of that.

I would suggest that, due to the running of the box oil through the engine rad heat exchanger, engine coolant temp = box oil temp, but only after perhpas 15 - 30 minutes. The idea of passing the box oil through the rad is more to bring it up to operating temp more quickly than to cool it I believe.

So that changes everything on all past posts on dipping at 80c.

Advice should say dip ATF when engine temp is at 80c ?

Provided the box oil has had time to be brought up to 80c as well I imagine.

The laser in these thermometers just aims it, they are infra red and subject to interference from nearby sources.

Double checked with probe thermometer. Same reading, 70c. Now convinced its engine temp that is the decider. Friends car reads less. 68c after a drive. C220.
