I would suggest that, due to the running of the box oil through the engine rad heat exchanger, engine coolant temp = box oil temp, but only after perhpas 15 - 30 minutes. The idea of passing the box oil through the rad is more to bring it up to operating temp more quickly than to cool it I believe.

I would think that is about right

So that changes everything on all past posts on dipping at 80c.

Advice should say dip ATF when engine temp is at 80c ?

Provided the box oil has had time to be brought up to 80c as well I imagine.

Double checked with probe thermometer. Same reading, 70c. Now convinced its engine temp that is the decider. Friends car reads less. 68c after a drive. C220.

Could it be that STAR is reading the engine temp at 80c ? I do not think that there is a temperature sender unit in the gearbox?

Sorry if this has already been said but I believe there is a temperature sensor in the gearbox. It is on the conductor plate. WIS refers to it as Y3/6b1
