Hi Guys, has anyone had the same issue and If so how did you overcome please?
Our 2001 Atego 815 clutch pedal has stopped returning to the top position after being depressed. If you pump it with the engine off it gains pressure but with the engine running it won’t.
There is just enough movement to change gear but it feels like it is deteriorating. Had it to a local truck garage whe said they had fixed it by changing the fluid but it has returned. Fluid reservoir is full and I cannot find any leaks.
Any ideas would be welcomed.
Thanks

Master or slave cylinder. (cheapest options) or release bearing sticking in the clutch.
How many miles has the clutch got on it. ?
Though if bleeding the system fixed it last time try that again. How long did it work for after bleeding.

No idea about the clutch mileage unfortunately. After bleeding it lasted
About 200miles or so. It’s a Horsebox so stands all week then does a few hundred miles on a weekend.
Would you see some fluid if it was the seals in the master or slave cylinders?

Yes seals in master cyl or slave cyl .. Other than that a fluid leak may be .
Wouldn’t you be able to see fluid though? The level in the reservoir is high and there is nothing on the floor below. Could it pass a seal and remain in the system?

It could be in the master cylinder on the brake booster , because brake fluid will leak in to the car ,,so put you hand up by the foot peddles under the dash where the foot brake is And if the slave cylinder is leaking then you will see or feel oil in that area ...If it was the slave cylinder you will see that leaking under the motor in the clutch housing area .

Can a clutch slave cylinder fail without leaking?

Can slave cylinder fail without leaking? Yes master cylinders can fail without leakage, the clutch master cylinder has a piston inside and there are s

However, you could also try the following as a quick and dirty test for a failing seal since clutch fluid is cheap:

  • Suck the old clutch fluid out of the reservoir (using something like a turkey baster, for instance).
  • Top off the reservoir with fresh fluid.
  • Wait a couple days to see if the new fluid turns dark.
  • If your fluid gets dark within a couple days, it is likely you have a failing seal in the clutch master cylinder, especially if you exhibit any other symptoms listed above.

So your fluid level is good and you have not lost any .. . and fluid is up to lhe level ? then like above the seals have gone . Just try bleeding the system first and refill with new fluid. I have had a few cars but all have shown a sign of leaking . Also look under the car to see if there is a large spring going on to the clutch activation arm that returns it after you press down on the clutch peddle
