Thoughts / experiences required to avert serious travesty of justice / disaster

A bloke I work with has it in his head that he's going to buy an Audi S3, or.... a 1978 450SLC on mercseller for under £8K

What do I need to tell him to get him to buy the SLC. He's 28 and wants a car that, how shall I put this, will attract the ladies. I've already told him in no uncertain terms that he'll turn more heads with the SLC than in ANY Audi. He's got a garage to keep it in.

What does he need to look out for on these things? I told him to spend a couple of hundred quid to get an expert to look at it because he'll be bankrupt if its a dog.

I've always loved the shape of SLCs but they don't seem to have aged that well, at least there aren't that many really good ones left. When I was a boy I saw a silver/black leather car parked outside The Waterside one night & fell in love.

http://www.barons-auctions.com/ has them for sale occaisonally, with a silver 80K car withdrawn from their last sale - might be in their next one.

If he fancies something rarer, more modern, not prone to rust & with performance that will blow the doors off a 450SLC my car is for sale on mercseller - http://www.mercseller.com/popup.cfm?p_n=214292&p_i=214292

For a private sale the price would be adjusted. Good luck.

Thanks for the replies. I'll paste the lot into an e-mail to him. I'm being selfish here because I'm having a go if he gets the merc !! I'll stop talking to him if he gets the Audi.

i hope he has more reasons to buy a car than one to find the ladies.

dating agencies mite prove better for finding women but an AUDI S3 is never gonna be noticed. I have had several cars noticed by different people and here they are.

1 Corsa GSI. was fresh out the box when they were first released and was noticed by spotty boys aged 14 who read Autoexpress and noticed I had one 4 days after they were on sale. result:- no women.
2 Ford Puma. Look good and attracted lots of women, mainly coz they wanted the car not me. Result- no women.
3, The ONLY SEAT LEON 20VT in AGEAN blue. Noticed by one Subaru driver who liked the wheels. result- no women.
4 Sliver SLK. Noticed by school boys who shotued nice car when i went passed. Noticed by girlies in rearview mirror who followed, signalled, made me stop and pass phone numbers. result- women found, relationship blossomed, life intervened, moved on.
5, Subaru WRX. noticed by rally jacket wearing wanna be boy racers and men with boys around 11 and lots and lots of police people. result: - no women
6 SLK black. lots of looks and girly sat on pavement opposite my house looking at car when car first appeared on drive: Result- awaiting

not sure if that helps but there you have it.

I must mention my firstest ever car. a 1976 mini 1000. Yes it was done up. big wide wheels and one of them snow catchers on the rear window, large bore exhaust and extende steering column. Playboy rabbits on side. It was crap. got noticed tho. actually got noticed by a girl I would have had if i had known. I found out when I got married and this girl explained. Wife and Girl were 2 different females. Dropped a right old one there i did. Am halfway to repairing the damage. Got rid of the wife.

I know what you mean. The SLC will be a head turner for just about everybody. The problem is, he can't make his mind up. a bit of the old "I used to be indecisive, but now I'm not sure" and maybe a bit of "The inogural meeting of the apathy society has been canceled due to lack of interest"

I'll keep banging on at him.
