auto box fluid volume

Hi, Can anyone tell me what volume of fluid is required in an auto gearbox change.
Mercedes cant tell me. I understand one needs a special dipstick to measure.
1998 C200, W202, 722.6 box I believe.

The newer 5g boxes are around 7.5L , might give you a start point . (3.5L in the sump)
Does Haynes do a manual for your car ?

For the 722.6 5sp,trans, to do a complete change of the trans,TC , transfer pipes and cooling radiator, you will need minimum 11 ltrs. This is because some of the 722.6 TCs don't have any drain plug, so you have to drain them by pumping new fluid into them which forces the old fluid out. When the new fluid appears, job is done. But understandably this wastes a lot of fluid. If you want to know how this is done, get back to me, OK

This is the method I follow. And I've done it on nearly all of my Mercs having the 722.6 Transmission.
I firmly believe the less you fiddle with and disturb the better! "Keep it Simple"!

1) Get yourself some good ATF. I use Fuchs Titan 4134. (2x4lts). A new Filter and Rubber Seal.
2) Get yourself a Dipstick, readily available on Ebay. The 1.2M is best with the Diamond Shape Point. (This does not go all the way in, just insert gently until it stops - done with a hot Transmission 80*C).

3) You will need a 5mm Hex Socket, and a open container For draining into that will hold at least 4lts. A Funnel with a thin spout.
4) Check the level of the AFT and make sure it is at the High Mark on the Dirstick when Transmission is hot - 80*C. Top up if required This must be done before anything else!

5) Open the Drain Plug and let it run until it stops. It will usually be about 2.75lts. - Replace the Drain Plug to torque setting.
Measure exactly what came out of the Transmission and then replace with the same amount of Fresh ATF via the Dipstick Hole.

If you have followed this procedure there will be the correct amount of ATF in the sump. Check to make sure after you have brought the fresh ATF up to temperature.

Do this a total of 3 times over a period of 4-5 Weeks following the same procedure.

On the the last one after you have drained the Transmission Sump drop the Sump, 6 Bolts with Clamps. Be carefull as there will still be about 500ml in it. You must measure this along with the drained amount. (approx 3.25lts).
Replace the Filter, just pulls off. Clean out the Sump and Magnets - replace the Magnets after cleaning them off. Replace Sump and Drain Plug.

I was advised to use this method as a flush can give what is called Transmission Shock which can lead to a world of pain!

Of course you don't have 100% fresh ATF but it is a lot better, and safer, than what was in there! Plus you have a Fresh Filter!

Of course you can do it any way you feel fit. Or better still take it to a Transmission Specialist. But even then I've heard of nightmares and a lot won't guarantee that everything will be 100% afterwards!
