When the engine/gearbox are cold there appears to be some slip between gears 2 and 3. The engine intially revs a little high then recovers. Is it possible for an auto box to slip?

i am far from an expert here, but my autobox was slipping, and under the advice of a few here, mainly "television" I checked the atf level, and it was low. search here for auto box oil issues and u should find all the info you need, from the correct fluid, and how to measure the levels as you wont have a dipstick (mb do not fit one)

First step is to have the auto fuild level checked! then go from there!

Yes I am the third one to say check the level, or rather have it checked.

Do not confuse the slipping with the car holding onto the 2nd gear to warm up the CAT quickly

OK instead of starting a new thread I'll hi-jack this one (sorry). My SLK is the first auto I've ever had and would like to know what you auto drivers do when at sat at lights and in traffic, do you leave it in "D" and keep your foot on the brake or put the box into "N"?? I've been putting it into "N" as I'm not sure what effect leaving it "D" will have when stationary.

Cheers,
TR.

Hiya Hijaaker lol

personally I always leave in (D)rive if I expect to be pulling away pretty soon, if It looks like ill be hanging around a bit I will drop to (N)uetral, saves that little bit of juice :) I am sure that by the end of each year I save at least £1 in petrol but hey :) I did read that dropping to P is bad in case you get a whack up the back.

We have done threads in the past on this and 95% of us do the right thing and leave it in D for all normal stops like traffic lights etc.

To keep putting the car into N is not good as all of the drive train components are wearing each time you move the lever to N from D, it should also tell you in your handbook to keep it in D for all normal driving.

I have been driving auto's since 1960 and I have never moved the gear stick to N whilst driving yet

I'll stick it in N if I'm stuck in traffic for a while, especially if it's dark and I think my brake lights are blinding the poor guy/gal sat behind.

P.S. Poor form hijacking a thread like you did. Please start a new one - it won't kill you. ;o)
