sport mode?

as in W/S switch?

W stands for winter, S for standard

you should NOT drive in W mode unless there is ice / snow on the ground, it knackdrs the 'box as it makes it slip loads.. this was according to MB germany to someone (one here /another forum) who bought his direct from the factory..

maybe after X,000 miles of W driving the box has given up?

i stand to be corrected....

may I strongly suggest that you get the oil changed ASAP?

MB say that the boxes are sealed for life - a bit of a bone of contention around here - it will cost abotu 100 quid inc labour and is worth it for peace of mind. this is suggested after 'normal' driving after 60k miles, so with 60k of driving in W mode it will definatly need it. essentially, there are clutches and band brakes inside the box, and they will have shagged the oil up.

book it in to a local independant dealer of your choice NOW (an MB specialist, and it should use about 8 litres of oil - make sure they do the torque converter as well.... if you are in west london or nearby, george fraser is a good gearbox man - if in brum, andy gale, anywhere else - i have no idea.)

I have to disagree with this....driving with the box in Winter mode has undoubtedly stopped me from ending up in ditches/trees/other peoples cars on a number of occasions. Since buying my C36 AMG i've had it switched over whenever it rains or the roads are greasy, not just ice and snow (although it doesn't move a lot in snow with no weight over the back wheels, as I discovered last year).

Having to drive in Sport mode in the wet is just too dangerous. I don't believe it knackers the box any faster since I remember reading a previous post on here from someone with a C36 or C43 and said they drive in Winter mode all the time because for them, it makes the car easier to drive.

To my knowledge their box still functions OK. Mine is just fine (touch wood) and i'm due to have my first ATF change in August.

PS I have no traction control on my car, hence the cautious driving

winter mode only works at low speeds anyway and shuts off automatic at i thinking now is it 30 mph or 15 mph, never mind its one of them and it does no harm to the box at all its only there to get you out of slippery situations and it works very well

Ermmmmmmm..........

I think there is only one real difference, in winter mode the box will be lazy and the threshold (rpm/vacuum) for the transmission to move 'up and down the box' will be lower, also kickdown is disabled on moving off from rest.

The autoboxes are switchable between Winter and Summer modes. In winter mode the gearbox selects 2nd gear to pull away from stationary and will also change up through the gears at lower engine revs to limit the power going through to the wheels. Winter mode works at all speeds but can be over-ridden by flooring the gas pedal.

Logic suggests that winter mode will put strain on the engine and transmission more than in summer mode, would you constantly drive a manual by pulling away in 2nd gear and changing up a gear at 3000rpm? Seeing as there is no clutch to slip in an auto box then the fluid will be taking most of the strain causing overheating and premature failure.

Certain traction control systems only operate at low speeds, the system on the Vito vans only works upto 15-20mph but can be re-programmed to operate up to 30mph. As far as I know the traction control on the MB cars works at all speeds, otherwise it would be pretty pointless.

As the others have said, always use the box in Summer mode unless traction is difficult on snow, ice, mud or wet, slippery roads. Winter mode is also less economical as the engine is laboured.
