Hi all. Just bought a 190 D reg with 100,000 on the clock and discovered low revs at tick-over as if choke is not kicking in (choke not working i think) . Is there a simple solution to this . The car has a carb , Its a 2ltr . Above choke housing , there is a cylinder which is screwed in with a wire from the top going into the loom . Could this be the problem ? I would be grateful if anyone could give me some advise . Thanks, Ian..

Hi there, the autochoke only works when the engine is cold. If your car is starting fine and is idling at higher revs when cold, then choke is fine.
To adjust your idle should be simple case of turning a screw somewhere. Im not sure about the exact location on this engine, but any mechanic could do this in seconds.

If the problem is only at cold, then it is the autochoke. It has probably got stuck. I'd be here all day if i tried to explain what steps to go through, but basically you need to take that whole unit off that you described (with the wire) and makesure everythign can move freely and give it a good spray with lubricants....

If you dont feel confident then ask a mechanic, its not a hard job really, just need to understand how it all works!

Thanks jaymanek for getting back to me . Its when the engine is cold that the revs are not high as when the choke is on . I will strip the unit and find the problem and will say if it is cured . Just been up to wigan with my mate to get him a merc as well . So ive converted him from having a vauxhall...

Thanx . I took the choke to bits and nothing was broken inside , so I sprayed with wd40 and oiled it with 3in1 as wd40 evaporates . Tickover still low revs when engine is cold but it does not cut out . As the saying goes "If it aint broke , dont fix it" . So Ill leave it for now and just re-do the cooling system (flush out and put new anti-freeze in) . The coolant is looking a bit black . I will try and find andy's thread and read about the choke . Thanx again and ill catch u later....

Hi Jay

I glad some body reads em. I was sure I had written a A4 size article on adjusting the chocke mechanism.

Ian its on here some where have a look. You will probably find you need to adjust one of the screws on the throttle flap. One adjust the idle & the other the choke speed. Can never remember which ones which.

Hi , Andy . Thanks for getting back to me . Ihave seen your write-up about the choke and found it informative . Its the two screws that i was looking at on my carb . Ihave adjusted the screw nearest to the engine and the revs did go up , but I havent adjusted the smaller screw nearer to the choke body as I didnt even see this until I read your essay . I will have to give the small screw a couple of turns to see if it does the trick .
Thanks for your help , and Ill catch you all later .
Regards , Ian
