Hi All, I'm brand new on this site and brand new to merc's, I've just been given a 230 te estate - c reg.... it's in really good cond' but the gear box don't work...the gear box was replaced 2 yrs ago with re-con and it seems to have already given up the ghost..the previous owner "a friend " said there was no symtems prior to the car stopping , no noises and no slipping, they were just driving along and the car lost drive, they had to coast to stop... has any one experienced this or does anyone know what the cause may be..before i get a kick in the nuts from the gearbox specialist.. any help would be appreciated..

Check and top up the gear box with oil, if still not working check the selector linkage from lever to box, maybe has come adrift.

The valve block is a good reason to loose drive, it only takes one valve to stick open and you loose drive. Go to the firm that fitted the box. they can put a preasure gauge on the torque converter, if that is OK it only leaves the valve block ( easy to change).

I opted for a used unit three months ago, and could recommend MercLand Southampton for one - £200 + £40 delivery and came cleaned, palleted and c/w torque converter NEXT DAY! Managed to get it fitted and filled, new filter etc. for £300 by my local two-man garage. Big difference from £1200/£1300 + fitting + VAT for a recon unit.
Good luck.
