Auto gear box problems

Dear Sirs

I own a 320 CLK Automatic Coupe, registered in April 2003 which has just done 60.000 miles. Being a lady owner I do not thrash the car and I have just found out that my gear box needs replacing - obviously a very expensive part.

I am asking if there are any inherent problems that could cause my gear box to give up? I have heard that the anti freeze from the radiator does leak into the gear box oil and therefore can create problems that could result in this happening.

I also understand that the gear box oil should be replaced over 36,000 miles and the question I am asking is if the garage who have serviced the car regularly (a Mercedes dealer) should know to do this and if they have not then have I got a case against them or, at the very least, should they help me towards the cost of this gear box?

This is an urgent request - can anybody out there help a lady owner who has no idea with regard to the inside of a car.

Respond soon.

Many thanks.

can you give us a clue whats happening please

wheres my manners lol, welcome to the forum :)

Service does not include ATF change, at the time the box was treated as a sealed for life job and only touched when broke

faulty radiator

I have a clk 320, only 60,000miles, 2003, same problem. They have quoted me nearly £3000 to fix, new torque, flush through the gearbox, and they will not contribute to the cost.

Even though this is a regular problem apparantly. there was a recall, but mine wasn't. They are going to come back to me to tell me why mine wasn't.

Im in the UK, where are you?

Barbara I, teresam,

Please can you describe in your thread what the gearbox is doing for example:-

Can you drive car, if so in what gear/gears?

Can you use all gears or is it stuck in 2nd gear (35 mph max speed) or 3rd gear (65 mph max speed)?

Does it clunk into gear, slip/flare when changing gear?

Is there vibration?
