The box must be drained and the sump removed after it has been cleaned.
The torque converter cannot be drained, and you will need to buy a dip stick.

Do not use any other fluid other than the MB version or the Shell

MOTUL Dexron III
Use in all systems for which DEXRON or MERCON Standard is required. Oil film stability under high temperature.
Automatic gearboxes, torque convertors, power steering systems, boat reversers, hydrostatic transmissions, hydraulic or mechanical systems.
Approvals: General Motor Dexron III F-30336. Ford Mercon M 950805 and M 941108. Allison C4-2347296, Caterpillar TO-2, Voith.

Seems a bit general purpose to me - I wouldn't put it in my gearbox although I'm sure it is highly thought of in some quarters.

Also, you don't need a dipstick - my gearbox specialist doesn't. Just measures the quantities out and in I think. He is very confident about his methods and they seem to work.

Dip stick part number is MW140 589 15 21/00 £21.08 + VAT. My dealer initially refused to sell me one saying it was a workshop specialist tool. I politely kicked-up a bit of a fuss and he changed his mind (I've read elsewhere on this forum that others have been refused too).

Auto box is "sealed for life" though MB don't say how long or happy that life will be. I had the fluid changed at 7 years & 80,000 miles. The torque converter doesn't have a drain plug so you can only get about half the fluid out (so don't re-fill based on the full capacity). Because you can only do a 50% change the subsequent changes need to be more frequent, say every 40,000 miles. Worth changing filters, seals, and any other cheap plastic bits at the same time.

Total cost from an established auto box company (E J Rose in Mansfield) was £100.

I would find a new specialist as the gearbox fluid level is critical. The dipstick MUST be used. How do you know the level was good in the first place?

It is possible to get it all out. I will do a "How to" soon.
