Hello all,
I would appreciate any help on this problem which has eveloped overnight in my '00 C220 CDi estate. Went for a short trip this morning and parked. Came bak to car 10 minutes later and could not get gear selector out of "P".
Took some time fiddling with selector and eventually got selector to move. Same problem later in day. Once car was moving no problem experienced whilst driving, gear change normal and selector moving freely, once out of "P".
Any help gratefully accepted,
MH

Brake light switch is the cheapest and easy to fit thing to try first at £9 from any MB dealer

malcom, could this be parking on a slope and putting it park before applying the hand brake, only ask as my range rover use to be a bugger for that, and would not release the parking pual in the box as there was to much weight leaning on it, I do not know how the moden mercs work but it use to be a bitch some times in the old ones,Mick.

This car uses a DAS system, and the stick locks up when it does not recognize the key or the BAS is malfunctioning with an implausible brake light switch signal.

Its quite a common MB fault

Hello all,
could not get gear selector out of "P".
Took some time fiddling with selector and eventually got selector to move. Same problem later in day.

If the selector fails to move out of P you can manually overide the locking solenoid by opening the shutter next to the selector gate and sticking a pen down to operate the solenoid.

You might be right with that malcom,I have owned a 450sec a 450sl a450sel 6.9 and in truth from memory other than a module on the inside of the front wing which used to cause rust under it and had been known to fall out on the wheel and the vacum pipe's for the central locking which could make a bishop use foul language trying to find the leaks they were good solid start every morning cars (bit of rust)but so did every thing then,My 6.9 saved my brothers life whilst driving in wales showing off to some of his mates,to much speed sharp left hander two foot thick stone wall, strait through the wall sixty foot drop ended up 30 foot in the air buried in a large oak tree! even made the papers, hurt list one broken leg(my brother)served him right cuts brusing and some broken diggets for the other three, I genuinly believe any other car and all four of them would of died, did kill the poor old merc though ****** welsh pushed it out of the tree instead of gentley lifting her down,Ah good old memorys.Mike:(:(

I would appreciate any help on this problem which has just developed this evening in my 'W' reg C220 CDi. I c ame back from work and parked and an hour later I had to go out and I could not get the gear selector out of "P". Has it got something to do with the BAS light as it keeps on coming on intermitently. Sorry for being ignorant but what does the BAS light signify....in the past I have had the brake switch changed and cured the problem, could it be the same? I managed to get it out of Park by manually overiding the locking mechanism by sticking a pen down the selector gate below "D" as mentioned in a post above and by a friend. But the problems persists what should I do?

The brake lamp switch is recorded as reason for the selector to lock up, they only cost £12 and so easy to fit, it must be worth another go

Hi,

Sorry for hijacking the thread, but i was seacrhing the forum for revelant threads and this seemed a close enough match.

My situation is this-

Like most of you around the UK, We have just had the coldest few days in this region for an awful long time. Our local temperature got as low -20 degrees and the averahe night time temp for a week was under -15 degree.

My E-Class Elegance Auto (2000) drove fine (we all fine as can be expected from a merc in what was really just a skating rink). On the 3 or 4th day, I parked the car up from a Friday lunch time to a Sunday afternoon when it hit -20 overnight after 6 inches of snow.

Dug the car out, started and drove no problem. Drove about 3miles across town and parked up. Went back out an hour later and it was locked in park. Also, there seemed to be a 3 second lag from turning the key to the the engine started. Released the park under that little flat I read about on here and got going. However, it seems I am stuck in second gear.

Drove home and parked it up in my car port until the thaw started - put it down to a faulty (frozen) sensor or a brake switch (replaced 12 months ago). Kept the car running for 30 minutes every couple days during the freeze and on one occassion noticed a "Low Voltage" Warning on the dash when it started.

Temperatures have rose to 7 degrees now and all of the snow and ice is gone. Have gone today to try and drive for the first time in about a week.

The first thing I notice is that it's not stuck in "P", however if i drop down to "D" then I can only return to neutral, the gear wont shift into reverse. However if i turn off the engine the gear box will shift into "R" and "P".

I am also still stuck in second gear.

The only other thing i notice is this.. If i am in motion while in "D" I can pop the gear in to "P" or "R" no problem. Yet, if i brake and come to a standstill the gear box will not go into "R".

Any ideas what the source of my problem may be?

I'm going to make a appointment with a inde tomorrow, but any pointers would be appreciated as I'm not sure now good this inde is?

Again, thanks for all the help this forum provides. As you can see from my post count, I'm a lurker, but this place has saved me hundreds over the last few years. :)

Cheers

You could check out the brake light switch as malcolm has posted earlier.. Try switching on only and slowly pumping the brake pedal whilst holding the gear lever and listen carefully.. you should hear or feel the locking solenoid operating..

Just had the same thing on my S 320 (220) Everything was fine, then came out, started the car but couldn't get it out of park. Tried everything, called the AA who tried all they could, looked for the release, but on the S with Keyless go there isn't a manual release. Ended up getting the car recovered to my nearest Merc dealer. They located the fault to the gear selector module. Just had to provide Log book, Driving License and Passport for Proof of ID before they could order a new one. Evidently, it needs to be programmed with my Keyless go details in Germany. Will take over a week to get the new part, and with labour £713..Has anyone else had the same with these keyless go Gear selector modules?
