Hi

I am sure that this is not new but I have tried looking at a number of threads and not found anything!

My 1999 280SL is sticking in gear and not changing up/down, sometimes in low and sometimes in a higher one. I have to stop and turn the ignition off and start again and then it is ok, but problem becoming more frequent. As a total plonker when it comes to these things can anyone please give me some advice?

many thanks

Rob

Lack of gear change and cured by a restart is commonly a symptom of the ECU going into safe mode. The most common cause for this on most cars is the MAS or Air Mass Sensor which is easy to change. Does it run well when this isn't happening or is there a general feeling of being down on power and uneconomical? Not always easy to tell though I admit.
If it is electronic, it should show up on a diagnostic at your local dealer or specialist.

Hi,
I feel for you, i had a similar problem but my sl320 wouldnt start after it locked in limp home mode, took 2 months to figure out it was i loose connection to the elactroninc transmission control unit..... after many part changes and hours upon hours spent in the garage.
First get a Star diagnostic check done find out the codes and where its pointing to
then i would disconnect and lubricate all connectors and reapply
run the car and see what happens.
see if the codes are still there.
Then i would start replacing parts etc etc....

What you could try is when it locks up,don't turn the engine off, but move the selctor to nuetral and back to drive, as some 1999 cars have got some selector problems. Try it.
