I'm hoping someone can help.
I have had my car into my local garage to have a new Aux belt today.
But he has discovered a problem that he has not seen before.
He says that it shouldn't be floating ?
I have uploaded a video of what it is doing.
hoping someone might be able to give me some advice?

Thanks

Ok, i am sorry but you need someone with more knowledge than i on that engine. Perhaps its some sort of timing plate that has come adrift from where it should be.
I suppose only way forward is the remove pully and have a look.

I have just looked again, i wonder if its some sort of shield, and being loose is how it should be. Perhaps it just stops crap going behind the pully.
I have to admit i am guessing here

It could be, The mechanic was baffled by it, and wouldn't touch it & said I probably need to get specialist advice

The crankshaft pulley on these engines contains a one way pulley, much like the alternators used to have. This saves the life of the belt etc.

It should move in one direction, and not the other. If it moves in both, replace the pulley.

Thanks for your reply.
Looking at the video again, I think whats spooked my mechanic is the fact he can turn the pully with his fingers, that surely cant be right? the car runs fine , just making a belt noise, hence why it was in the garage

should it be possible to turn the crankshaft pulley with your fingers whilst its fully connected ?
