Purchased a b180cdi two months ago. Beautiful car, well made . . . but test drove an ordinary b180 cdi. Actually bought the B180 cdi SPORT. According to the German Mag Autobild the B180 is for the over 60's. Correct so far. Sports seats are USELESS for over 70's to get in and out of. The suspension is sports, ie very hard. Low profile tyres, a lousy ride and every worm hole is a large bump. My fault for buying this model and I'm not blaming Mercedes. Should have been more awake at the showroom.
Steering is 100 percent and it goes round corners fast and holds the road as if its on rails!
OK, the only further comments regard the fuel consumption, although 20 percent better than my previous petrol vehicle C180K it is no where near the published figures. The showroom personnel seem unaware of these figures and in fact say they are a load of rubbish. Iv'e always been able to get near the figures for other vehicles in the past.
PS The Sat Nav is brilliant and recalibrates if you decide en route to go a different way to the same destination!

It is very sad that all Sport variants begin by wrecking the suspension and fitting unhelpful tyres -the last thing you want on UK roads. I had a B 200cdi and did 5000 miles in her. Got well over 40mpg on a run. best was 45. Nowhere near ex urban 57 or whatever it was. I have found on petrol cars I get the Euro figures. My all round average is their combined figure. BUT with diesels (B,E and S class) I have found that on a run you work hard to get the combined figure and my average is about 15% below the combined figure. Odd but happened on 3 different classes.

However my brother with a 160cdi A class (it's 2 litres but less tuned than the 180 or 200) really gets 65mpg on a run. Unbelievable!

To be fair, the figures quoted are based on official tests so not MB's fault, but as most of us live in traffic conjested areas and even the motorways don't allow for a steady cruise, we rarely achieve the quoted numbers. If allowed to cruise gently, I can get well over 45 from my 270 and have done this on several long runs, but I'm lucky to crack 40 on my daily commute.
Also a new car will be tight, and you no doubt have the aircon on - just a couple of extra reasons.

Like you, I have mixed feelings about sport models. With the sport pack and 17'' wheels on my E I find the ride harsher than my old elegance and less Merc'y as a result. I don't necessarily regret it, and certainly not when I'm feeling a bit agressive and throw it into a corner at silly speeds, but when I just want to dawdle, it's not the same. Still, I chose it with my eyes open and could have had an elegance for less money so only myself to blame.

I really don't fancy the new 211 sport. Same suspension I imagine but with 18'' wheels! - Ouch!
