Posting to release some pent up rage over the white R107 300SL I?ve been to see. I originally phoned the dealer saying I?d only view if a reasonable part-exchange was considered for my car as I was coming a long way (50+ miles of all minor B roads). After agreeing a to a guide line P/X, I arranged to view this morning. I phoned to say I was about to leave and set out on my merry way. A few hours later after many rural towns and speed cameras I arrived.
For starters the guy was obviously just working from home and not really a dealer. Not being deterred by this I started looking around the car when he came out and asked me to leave the car and wait by the road in front of the house. After almost 15 minutes I was becoming annoyed so went and knocked on his door. He then came out closing the door behind him and explained that he may have sold the SL to a guy inside and asked me to come back in 30 minutes . At this I voiced my annoyance and was told the guy had just turned up. Considering their was no address in the add and that this guy was working from home it was blatant a lie!
As I?d travelled quite a way I decided to grab a pint in the local pub, carm down a wait. After a while my mobile rang and it was the dealer saying how the guy was with him, had offered the advertised price and was wondering if I wanted to up the offer. Considering how I hadn?t viewed the car yet and didn?t want to start getting into bidding match I politely:wink: said no and went home.

So what?s your worst car buying experience?

Also if anyones looking to buy a white 300SL in the Macclesfield area of England, BE WARNED!

P.S. If anyone knows of a reputable dealer with a good 280 or 300SL in the Derby area, I'm still looking!

He's trying to do you over!!

Been there a couple of times, one of the oldest tricks in the book.
You turning up whilst the other guy was there only made sure he got at least the asking price.

Doesn't help you, but there are some dishonest people out there

Well since returning home and posting the above I've had another phone call from the dealer :) . Apparently he's run a HPI check on vehicle he's took as P/X and it's come up bad, so the SL is still available. On this I replied "you've wasted enough of my time" and put the phone down on him  .

As they say; what goes around, comes around :D . Serve's him right! :D  :D  :D

Tell you what, why don't we waste some of his time.........post his number and we can all call him pretending to be interested in the SL he has for sale.

Then he'll see what its like to have his time wasted!!!!!!!!!

Dodgy car dealers......don't you just love them.

Cheers

 I've been there before mate. I drove up to the bleakest parts of Yorkshire to view a car about two years ago. A picture in the Auto Trader made it look as though it was a reputable dealer in the background. When I got there it was nothing but a glorified shed sharing the same grounds with a larger car dealer. This dealer has four cars in stock, one of them being an Audi, and two other more smaller cars. The car I went for was on test-drive. So I waited, only to find that the several people "queuing" outside were people waiting to test drive the car I was there for! I waited. Low and behold, I got my turn (about four test drives after!) Considering the low mileage on the clock, the car's interior was in quite a bad way - valeted but worn seats, stale tobacco smell, all the symbols on the dashboard switches had faded/disappeared to name but a few things. And even though none of the five people who test drove the car before me showed any interest, I decided to walk away. The salesman and his assistant (yes two of them) tried the hardest sale on me that I have ever experienced. I tested the water and offered them a £100 deposit - but they were looking for at least £200.

The whole thing was a farce from the beginning, and to think I drove over 100 miles to get there! Some 'traders' are very smart and think they can wrap the wool over the eyes of the buyer. The problem is, with things like the Auto Trader (which is a great publication, despite this), you have to travel to find out exactly what the situation is. Never mind, put it to experience like I did (and yes I am still angry about it when reminded).

I would suggest that the traders should have a rating assessed by the Auto Trader people so that these phony voyages are avoided.
