Folks, just wanted to share a very recent experience with you. WARNING - quite a long, frustrating tale.....................

My sister wanted an E class estate to replace her Focus last week. I found an amazing car online at MB Direct Waltham Cross - 320 CDi, 3 years old and 12k miles, 50 grands worth of car for 24 grand. I call the number and get the usual 'your local dealer is.........' crap from the girl on the phone. I insist that it is THIS particular car I want , not a similar one at my local place. 'OK she says, I'll call you back'. I get a call from her saying that she has checked with Waltham Cross and the car is available and that someone from my local MBD will call. Sure enough, an hour later a salesman from Kingston calls me and describes the car to me saying that he can get it down from Waltham Cross if I leave a deposit over the phone. Reluctant to do this I explain that if he gets the car down on the Monday afternoon (It is Saturday) we will do the necessary then. He wanted more so asked me to take her car in for a px valuation that afternoon. I raced up to Kingston with her car for him to value. After 40 mins he presented me with a piece of paper with the cost to change on it. I squeezed a better deal from him, but then he hit me with the whammy - the Waltham Cross car was sold on Friday!!! Somewhat amazed and hacked off at being dragged in to negotiate on a car that was already sold , we left in the almightiest of huffs.

Chapter 2 - when I got home I found her another car, this time a 350 petrol, almost identical to the other one with only 8k miles and the same price. Guess which dealer.....................MBD Kingston! Against our better judgment my sister called them at 11 on the Sunday morning and booked us a test drive at noon. The car was still available at their site and they remembered me from the day before (funnily enough). We arrived a bit early to be told they didn't know where the car was. Then we were told they'd found it and it was boxed in at the back of their lot on the other side of the A3 than the one we were told to be at! I had other things to do and was getting a bit peed off. It took them 45 mins to get the car out, so nearly 1 o/c before my sis went out in her potential purchase. The car was filthy inside and out and all 4 alloys were scuffed to bits. The sales mgr there couldn't give less of a sh*t if he tried. He then tried to stitch us up on the deal which he got very short shrift from me.

In the end , she bought it and we are collecting it tomorrow, so tune in tomorrow for part 3!

I wanted her to get it away from them asap because in the car lot was a nice 60 grand CLK63 AMG conv..................with another car resting, yes resting on its bumper.

This by far is the worst car buying experience I have ever had and you have all been warned:-x

We bought a car from them back in January and had the same issue re: deposit. We agreed to give them a credit card but only on the basis that they would not bill it until the following weekend when we could see the car.

It's interesting we have bought a couple of Mercs recently one from Direct Mercedes and one from a main dealership. It is clear that they run very different business models. Direct Mercedes, once they have your money they lose interest. To the point where they took back our car to carry out a remedial dent removal as agreed at delivery and returned it with a broken wing mirror and a larger dent in a different position!! No wonder the driver dropped it back in the dark! I have to say that the experience gives used car dealers a bad name and we wouldn't trust them again.

Just make sure that you get everything sorted before you give them the money. We took them at their word and have regretted it ever since and hence why our next car we went to a main dealer.

Good luck.

To be honest, when I buy a car , if there is a bad vibe about the deal or anything to do with it, I walk away.

When you spend that sort of money you need to have a good feel about the whole thing.

I'm with you on that. Overall we are happy with the car, however, as a result of the service we certainly didn't even consider going back there for the other car! I get the impression that they are incentivised heavily to shift cars and will use any tactic they can to achieve their targets which in all likelihood are significantly higher in terms of volume that a main dealer.

Because the car itself was worthy of it, that's why. Low mileage, loaded to the top with extras that someone else has taken the hit on, and within budget. I was buying a car from these people not marrying them. I never have to dirty their already filthy site again.

I was also expecting a bit of service recovery from them after the Saturday screw up, but like I said, the manager was not interested.

It's amazing how wrong these dealers get it. All they have to do is have the car ready "clean with all paper work" for you to view. The rest is like PRINTING money.

Hello

Once you get the car home and as long as your happy with it then you will soon forget the hastle I guess it just seemed odd if your SO dismayed you still bought it and changed from a 320cdi to a 350 petrol?

Plenty of cars around and a petrol 350 in todays market will mean the buyer has the ball in your court.

Post pics though assuming all ok when you collect :)

Diesel is not the be all and end all to us. My sister only does 4k miles a year and with petrol 10p per litre cheaper where we live, diesel doesn't make sense. What really mattered to her was the spec and this one has it all.....
7 seats, comfort ventilated seats with memory, parktronic, Comand, phone etc etc. It has only 8k miles on the clock so she will hang onto it for years I expect.

There are not many used cars around like this one so we had to grin and bear it. I hope that like you say, she will be enjoying the car long after the memory of the buying experience fades.

2005 C270CDi Avantgarde Estate. Bought 2005, sold 2022.
I got my car from MB Direct Birmingham (Erdington).

I was asked to give a deposit over the phone so they would take to car off sale (it's 90 mins drive for me) and I agreed on the condition that it would be refunded if the deal didn't complete for wahtever reason. In the event it turned out the salesman hadn't taken the deposit off my card anyway.

I found they were *very* keen to sell cars, which was refreshing after going to "normal" MB dealers, who didn't seem in the slightest bit interested in selling me a car. I negotiated a £2k discount on the phone and got another £1.5K off when I was there - it's one of the few cars I've bought where I've been pretty happy with the deal.

The collection was pretty poor - they really wanted to deliver the car, I presume so they could dump it and run. I collected it and a couple of stone chips had been missed and it wasn't very clean (especially the wheels). The collection took literally 2 hrs and I think they were as fed with me as I was with them by the end of it. I wasn't shown around th car - just handed the keys and left to get on with it.

Aftersales was non-existant - some bits of paperwork never materialised and I gave up chasing them in the end.

I'm dreading tomorrow. Based on the experience so far something is bound to be wrong. MB Direct in Caterham were much better when I was looking for a car last year, but the cars they had were all poorly prepped.

Its more the fact you looked at two completely different engines, I'm not a derv fan myself I don't do the miles hence a ML350 myself.

:0 enjoy the car and I hope they give her some flowers and a full tank of fuel at least

My sister has a diesel Focus now and it keeps going in to limp mode due to some particulate filter or something so she is a bit wary of the smelly stuff now. Besides, she wouldn't know which was which even if you pointed it out to her. Strictly speaking she doesn't need 272 bhp, but I do when I borrow it :)

How do you rate the engine 210?

I don't think MB Direct will do either of those things. In fact I had to buy fuel for the test drive - the salesman had forgotten his fuel card (I used my work one :D ).

We were told that the reason the car was so late getting over to us was because it was boxed in by some cars and the salesman had driven off with the keys to the offending cars

I must say having brought my 55 from birmingham direct, 14 months ago(without even seeing it, paid over phone, and trailored down to me), finance wise felt I got a good deal, however as others have experience the valeting was very poor, a couple of poor paint work touch ups, and the front alloys repaired with a very poor paint colour match, but a no manuels on arrival was dealt with very quickly, and I was reasonable happy with the sale and experience, and car, but having read more recent posts on MB direct generally, they do seem to be a right shower, albeit there must be the odd good one out there! I have been recently discussing a new car for the wife with birmingham direct, (same sales guy), but am now very edgy about handing over my money, as I did, several months back, without seeing the car.

Could you not get it taken to the nearest MB Direct dealer to wherever you live against a £500 returnable deposit with purchase subject to a satisfactory test drive and the vehicle being as described?

As we are happy with the car in general, in hindsight we shouldn't have taken them at their word wrt the rectification after acceptance. We should have left it wit them to be rectified before handing over the money as once the cash has changed hands, the salesman gets his commision and loses interest!

Slender's suggestion would sound sensible and assume that the first handover visit won't result in you driving away the car. Difficult I know!
