My 320cdi will start then stop on first turn of the key it then will not start again without a long period of cranking .however once started will start 1st time for the rest of the day whithout any hesitation .the glow plug light is illuminating as it shoud and the engine runs very smoothly without any misfires whatsoever

Sounds like air leaking into the fuel pipes somewhere, have you had a new fuel filter fitted recently.

T212 facelift, 2013. A few toys including pan roof, 19" rims, Harmon Kardon, nappa, privacy glass.
nthe system is vacuumed it will draw air in overnight and each morning youare cranking to 'bleed' the system.

You will find a lots of posts on the forum covering this and Parrot of Doom covered it well. The usual culprit is the o rings on the fuel pipes. To be honest if they are orginal < iwould replace the hoses anyway, would guess they are nicely yellowed and brittle and will go themselves eventually.

rec get the proper Merc parts at about £20 average per pipe

Was an E300TD, now a Lexus LS400
Keep the fuel tank full to the top and try to park nose down overnight. If that clears the problem then its definitely an air leak. Another way to tell is just to look for air bubbles in the lines around the fuel filter, in the morning when you're cranking it.
