I seem to remember this being on the forum once before. Well, ive just bought my own copy os Mercedes Benz WIS (Workshop Information System) and it takes up a lot of hard drive. Howver its very good and all the dealers use it. In there it clearly states Quote; Always disconnect the negative terminal first and always connect the positive terminal first.

The main reason is a safety issue, should the spanner used touch the chassis or any exposed metal part of the car no damage is done. Doing the + terminal first on a recentlly charged battery could cause an eplosion.

To be quite clear disregard the polarity (you may have an older classic with pos earth),

Disconect the grounded side first and reconnect the ground side last.

I have seen the result of getting a spark off the high (ungrounded side) via a spanner and watch strap, the owner of the arm in the watch strap now knows that you do it the way that MB tell you. His spanner is now a piece of scrap steel.

This is normal practice on any vehicle, not only can sparks burn or ignite a battery giving off hydrogen (when being charged) it can also cause voltage spike through the electronic systems on the car possibly causing damage.
