V reg auto, this car is showing 57k but isn't the proper milege, but is belt or chain and at what milege should it be changed. I know when a belt goes it just goes that's top end usually wrecked, but a chain just rattles but give plenty of warning.

How would I know if it needs a new belt if I dont have any receipts to go by, also what colour should the auto box oil be?.

Its a chain on yours no worries there. the oil should be a dark brown colour if its black give it an oil and filter change.

Oh good a chain...........you say if the oil is black change it, but usually people say if thats the case walk away.

Oh btw......I haven't got this car yet, I'm trying to find out as much as I can before I (might) buy it. I'm just about to spend over £5k and getting a 30 day warranty and then after that something goes BANG.....

Was an E300TD, now a Lexus LS400
Your statutory rights give you 3 months, during which anything that goes wrong on the car (mileage, brakes, pads, tyres etc excepted) will not be your responsibility. If the car goes pop before 3 months are out, the seller is required to recompense you. Private sales are of course Caveat Emptor.

So don't sweat it.

Thats fine that, but what happens if something does happen and he says "I did say it was only 30 days, there's nothing I can do sorry!!", is it then a case of the CAB, trading standards or lawyers.

I know what you mean, I know when I asked about the milege (57k) and the the s/h the sale guy (young guy) said I the last owner had lost it, and also the other guy I spoke to today (manager of some kind) said the same thing.

Now whether I still went for it bearing this in mind because it does look like a well kept car, if it didnt say anything about the milege (as in not being correct) on a receipt ect then if anything serious did happen I could "go to town" with them.

The thing is too, this is a small local dealer who seem's to have in the same area for a good few years, but I personally dont know anyone who has used them because I haven't been in this area long myself.
