As of today our petrol has to contain 2,5% Bio Fuel (5% BY 2010) does anyone know if our engines can handle this without adjustment. My wife recons that vehicles running on bio-diesel have a very nasty smell.

given that grain prices have gone through the roof and parts of the world are starving as a result - this seems an excellent plan.

Given that when production and refining are taken into account it produces more CO2 than straight oil refined spirit the brilliance of the move is inestimable.

You beat me to it mate, I was going to ask the same question.

Will it have any effect on vehicle performance etc... Will the octane rating change because of this?

Not this again. I for one don't really care much for green politics. If the biofuel will see a dip in fuel prices and increased performance of my car I am for it.

Food shortages in the developing world are nothing new. Cutting down tree's is nothing new. It does seem silly to extract fuel from Land when there is still perfectly good oil in the ground. But if its cheaper to begin the switch over to biofuel now, which will maintain the mobility car culture that the western civilizations have done so much to build up.

How is life on planet zog ?

No need for rude comments.

Tesco and shell have used bio components in their high performace fuel ranges (RON99) to good effect. Biofuel sources are cheaper than oil based ones, so we should see a saving in fuel costs. Its basic economics, as is the rise in food prices.

WRT food prices in poor countries, its a) not our problem and b) supply and demand comes into play, their populations are expanding, so more strain is on their food supply. Its not like they are helping us, by cutting their population by birth control, to help them help themselves
