hi let me show you my 54 plate 115 vito's engine, well if you can see any of it under all that black death, which is a result of 2 injectors leaking and the fuel atomizing under the top guard into a type of brittle coal covering all the injectors and everything else, this came to my attention after hearing a chuffing noise and a smell in the cab
merc1.jpg

dealer says it all needs to come of and injectors need changing.Cost he could'nt say because he does'nt know how long to clean last 1 took about 8 hrs @£72 per hr plus parts n vat.
ive started to remove bit by bit with a small screwdriver and rubber hammer with a hoover running all time to remove waste as i go.

merc10-1.jpg

due to half engine being under bulk head access is gonna be a nightmare so was wondering how to remove what i think is rocker cover?,my question is i can see most of the torx bolts around the top cover but there are some at each side of the injectors,do these need removing also?also are the injectors screwed into this cover or into the head?in other words if i remove the cover will the injectors come out with it or not,if i have to clean it all to get access to screws n injectors ive no need to remove cover
merc7-1.jpg

any ideas n help welcome also will i need to replace injectors or could i just reseal them with new copper washers?

cheers edz

Hi looks like you have cleaned over a fifth of it away thats cost nawt so far
If your carefull why would you need new injectors they would just need removing cleaning & re-seating, if some are chuffing the that;s in your favour those ones might be easier to extract
Iv'e just removed 5 injectors and re-seated them on a ML 270
Where are you located

Just spotted you last pic

due to half engine being under bulk head access is gonna be a nightmare What is the hight that you have

my question is i can see most of the torx bolts around the top cover but there are some at each side of the injectors,do these need removing
See first pic they are clamped in the screw that your red arrow is pionting at is the screw in my picture

also are the injectors screwed into NO
in other words if i remove the cover will the injectors come out NO

if i have to clean it all to get access to screws n injectors ive no need to remove cover CORRECT

Kevin

As Kevin above.

If your dealer says new injectors, and he is going to bill you circa £150+ each, then go to another dealer/ specialist. Injectors have to come out to remove the rocker cover.

Many ideas on how to remove the carbonised diesel:

- scrape away as you are.

- Coca cola

- Oven cleaner

Do a search on the forum for others.

Did hear (from a secondhand source) that MB are now doing a solvent for this very purpose.
Will try & remember to check on Monday.

Cleaner

I would try Nitromoors (I think this is how you spell it) it is a fairly thick paint stripper.
We used to use it on marine engines for the same purpose.
Works great but do not let it on your skin, eyes or bodywork as it is not forgiving.

slowly slowly on this one, nothing other than patience
i would replace the injector plugs as the rubber seals get contaminated and also the pins can become loose causing cutting out, non start etc,
this outcome is why you should get a car serviced by someone who knows what they are looking for, we check for this fault on all cdi models,
noise, smell are instant giveaways, your van must have sounded like a train puffing away.

Mr Muscle over cleaner and a power wash, it might need 2 cans to get that clean but it will get it clean.

I check on every service too,it only takes a couple of minutes.
Did a CLK 270 with 34,000 genuine miles in September, just serviced at MB & they only picked up on it needing discs & pads all round.Probably need to ask them to check this specifically.

kebo57 1st pic is the torx bolt and clamp right so this is the bolt benz machanic says is stretch bolt and needs replacing? correct
your other pic is that a slide hammer or special tool for job?Yes correct
Like you said earlier working hight could be a problem with the slide hammer but that could be modified but those injectors can get realy stuck I mean realy stuck
That slide hammer is 3 kgs, I had a injector on my motor that need 60 to 70 pulls, full blast with that tool, I even had to put a glove on at 50 pulls it came up about 3mm I had to Knock it back down and up till it came out.
You are 81 miles away from me

You'll need to clean the seat, before fitting new sealing washer and stretch bolt. You may need a engeneering firm to do this for you if they won't loan you the tool.

ok heres sum pics from my mobile-
merc12.jpg

cleaned ready for removing injectors
merc14.jpg

1 down 3 to go
merc16.jpg

all out
injectors-tools.jpg

here they are ready to be checked the tools here are what i used to remove them after cleaning with screwdrivers and dyson also used airline to blow dirt away just before i removed them the ten mm spanner was used for leveridge with the torx key(thats all i had iv got no torx sockets yet)to remove stretch bolts, the big rusty spanner was ground down to fit injector nut and all i did was remove bolt then work the retainer loose and remove then use spanner to work the injector loose by moving it side to side and lifting up at same time and it slowly came out,ive bunged holes up with rag so i can clean up a bit more, dont know whether to try cleaning with coke cola or not?depending on what diesel guy says depends whether i have to get new injectors or not, what i want t know is only 1 washer came out with number 3 inj so how do i get the other 3 out? i can't even see down bore number 1 let alone get my head under bulkhead to see number 4,on another note only number's 1 and 4 were leaking but i had to remove 2 and 3 to get access to number 4 anyhow thats all for now will keep updated thanks for help
cheers edz

Hi
I must say well done saved you self a few bob

Might try a flat screw driver to remove those other copper washers you have an example washer. drop it in the hole and push the tapered blade down through the washer about 2.0 mm then rotate gentally lifting as you go.
Cant see anything wrong with those injectors I would just re-seat & refit

Your only problem now is the re-seating of the injectors

Try to keep the bits of carbon from entering the injector inlet holes also the common rail out let holes.

Well done on your cleaning job mate, that must of taken hours.

Make sure you remove the old copper seal rings from the bores if they are still down there. The engine will smoke like a pig if ones left down there.
