black smoke when cold (petrol vito)

Hi
I have a petrol vito it uses an excessive amount of fuel.

When warm and pulling away at low revs A flat spot with a cough and splutter. Ok at higher revs and when crusing on motorway etc..

When starting from cold lots of black smoke, appeares to disapear when warm......

Please help any suggestions would be much appreciated..nigel

its your cold start device that is energised by the ignition switch and isolated by the temperture sensor. In all nothing terrible.

thanks Televison, It would be good to know more,,,where is it located and can i purchase from a motor factors.You mention the temp sensor, might that need replacing??

I do not have details to hand, if the temperture sensor was not working it would leave the engine running very rich and over fuelled.

Thanks again Television,
been to local merc dealer to identify and locate where abouts the sensor situated on the engine no luck, they advised a diagnostic test £60 + vat for-
1hr,,
suggestion from the commercial garage where i worked as mechanic 30 yrs ago advised the fuel injection specialists, Hicklys of Taunton,,test £40.+vat...
40miles away..
or local auto electrical £35 ....OR
Should i try and locate it on the engine, replace myself & take a chance???????
....

I have very little VITO info, what I said was the principle of operation and how the cold starting works. I think that Hicklys of Taunton must be the best bet.
There are engine temperture and air temperture sensors, you could disconnect them one by one and see what happens.

much appreciate these pages and advice from logicaly minded individuals, at end of day, its my problem, i want to get it right and by sharing the problem it gives me the reasurance and confidence to make a desicion thats right in this point in time...
Must say i do like my vito done loads of miles drinks petrol,... but love it.

Hopefully my last message on this thread,,I think ive fixed my problem for £1.00, second hand peice of vacuume pipe from lennys in weston super Mare Lifted the bonett in temper and put my hand straight on it a fractured vacuume pipe, as soon as i made new connection running a lot smoother and no horrible flat spot, thank goodness for that. The real test will be tomorrow morning when starting from cold.....any suggestions on MPG and LPG conversion would be appreciated. by for now..nigel..
