Is there generally a real rivalry between Merc and BMW drivers or is it just exaggerated?

I'm a new Merc driver and have just had my car 3 weeks now but find that on the motorway BMW drivers do seem to have some issues

Either coming real close up behind or just booting off as if they're trying to pick a race...

I don't know if it's just me or have others experienced similar things?

Also how does the Merc 320CDI engines compare with the Beemer 330/530d engines in the real world performance wise?

Thanks.

I think BMW drivers just behave like that anyway, regardless of what car you're driving.

That acronym sums them up nicely!

Hello,

I've owned two BMW's a Z3 and a 3 series (330 m-sport convertible), The 3 series DOES get a bad reputation and I knew this when I bought mine but it IS generally the 316's debadges with single pipes that think they are in an ///M3... They were actually both great cars and I liked them. Didn't tend to get Merc having a go but the type R brigade and hot hatches...

Now I own a Merc albeit a bus Its funny no one has a go and no one tail gates.... is it becasuse its big and has the dark windows.

I think a few people are supprised at how well it goes.

One thing is for sure I don't think my driving changes with the cars I own.

Cheers

I drive a E 320 CDI Avantgarde which I bought new 2004 and now has 73k so is nice and run in so to speak.

A very quick comfortable car .

My wife has a new BMW 330 D Coupe latest shape , and for performance wins hands down no bother , the ride is harsher and it is the type of car that just wants to push on so not as relaxing as the Merc.

I've also driven the latest BMW 530 DSE , very quick and comfortable

In my opinion the BMW's have the better engine but I have not been able to compare with the V6 Diesel.

All cars have auto boxes.

The dealership issues with Merc have had direct comparison now and out of Audi ,MB and BMW that MB come a very sorry third.

I do not fall for the all BMW drivers are tossers myth , I come across plenty MB drivers which fall into the same category.

Dont forget the BMW 330d is smaller & lighter than an E320CDi. Also, anything with two turbos is going to be able to produce more power than one.

Had a peep on the BMW forum the other day, over 500 post about the problems on the new engine

2005 C270CDi Avantgarde Estate. Bought 2005, sold 2022.
I don't like the whole BMW thing - no particular reason, although the dealer refusing to talk to me didn't help.

However a few years ago I had a lowly 318i from work for about a month and I have to say it was a very nice drive. Even Mrs Rory, who takes no interest in cars whatsoever, commented that she liked driving it. I also had a 325i for a few days, and it's the only car I've ever driven where I deliberately took the long way home just for the fun of blasting it along quiet A roads.

Hey hey

I have both, so what does that make me??

Over the more recent years I have had both Mercedes and BMW's. I have to say that the BMW's always feel much better built and better handling. The Mercedes do have a "special feel" though and I think you tend to be more relaxed driving them.

Seems a bit wide-sweeping to assume anyone with a BMW is an arrogant idiot etc. Yes some are but so are some Mercedes drivers as well. I find ML's like to tailgate on motorways

I'm with Dave on this one. Over the years & in various jobs I've been able to try out the German trilogy of Audi, BMW & Mercedes.
At the risk of upsetting a few people, all three have much to commend them but whereas I am now very happy to drive my Merc, I would certainly not rule out having another Audi.
The problem with the Beemers is simply that at least 50% of the people who drive them fit perfectly with Dave's description. As a result everyone else assumes that 100% of them fit the bill & they treat you acccordingly, and don't let you out of side streets, want to cut you up constantly etc........
result = driving misery

never had a problem in the mercs (or Audis)

Thanks for the replies guys, varying opinions but generally most people here feel Beemer drivers do have issues.

I think the CLK320 CDi Sport can take on the 330d Sport Coupe performance wise and correct me if I'm wrong but it is the 335d which has twin turbos whereas the 330d has the single. The E320 is heavier and so that would be more comparitive with the 530d.

I would agree that handling wise BMW feel firmer with more confidence through the bends but in a straight line the way my Merc pulls once on the go it feels as quick as my previous car a 2005 Subaru Impreza STI (no joke) :)

I'm no street racer but next time I might just have a little play!! ;)

BMw owners think MB owners are odd

Hi All

I think you'll find that the attitude of MB owners' issues have been raised on BMW forums. I can't speak for Audi owners.

There is a rivalry and I have encountered it myself but I usually ignore the hand gestures and flashing lights of BMW owners. Doubtless some MB owners will give BMW owners similar treatment.

I suppose it has something to do with belonging to a tribe: the BMW tribe, the MB tribe, the AUDI tribe, etc., which seems to cultivate a competitiveness that manifests as rivalry. Maybe if we all drove anonymous 'boxes' the rivalry wouldn't exist? I blame the manufacturers, they're just as bad and often worse with their 'bigger', 'faster' advertising slogans and campaigns. Competition my improve products but it can make people behave like idiots. Nuff said.

REGARDS

Sounds a bit like people enjoy jumping on the "anti non-mercedes" bandwagon here! Bit of a shame really. Am sure the opposite happens on BMW and Audi forums :)
