There was an update on this poor drivers plight on the BBC news site. He looks like every other BMW 318 driver you have ever seen.

Reading between the lines, he had his foot hard on the brake trying to slow the car down...for 60 miles! Any normal person would have turned the engine off. If you were worried about the steering locking, turn the key to switch the engine off and then turn it back again a bit without starting the engine!

The steering will not lock with the key still in the ignition.

He made it up - hence they've arrested him.
So, accelerator jammed and it wouldn't go into neutral. I think he's been watching too many spy thrillers. One fault - possibly - 2 totally unrelated faults - yeah right!
Also, car floored doing 130 , brakes overheated and useless and he crashed into a roundabout. As he had no way to slow down prior to the crash, and the engine was flat out, this crash presumably occurred at 130? - odd he's still here to talk about it then!

Alternative suggestion - Lorry driver batting along at over 100 in his beemer, sees police car. Realises that he'll lose his licence and job if caught so floors it to try to get away. When that doesn't work, he makes up bullsh.t story. Police don't go with the story so lorry driver gets banned, fined, loses job and jailed for reckless driving and giving a false statement to the police!
